RNDr. Václav Nehasil, Dr., Department of surface and plasma science Abstract: In this work, we examined the suitability of rhodium deposited on a plasma sprayed substrate of titanium dioxide for catalysis reactions. With X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method, the thermal stability of TiO2 prepared with plasma spray technology on aluminum plate was tested at first. Then, rhodium was evaporated on substrate and thermal stability of the whole system Rh/TiO2 was determined. Further methods of thermal desorption spectroscopy and molecular beam were used to study adsorption and desorption of CO and reaction of CO with oxygen. It was verified that the system Rh/TiO2 ceases to adsorbing CO after heating above 620 K, also the CO reaction with oxygen exhibits considerably lower intensity after heating above 620 K. After calibrating on rhodium plate, it was determined that the intensity of CO2 creation on Rh/TiO2 is four times lower than intensity on the rhodium plate. Unprompted adsorption and desorption passivation of the system, however, seems to be the most significant problem. Therefore, the system was assessed as unsuitable for further research. STM study of adsorption of metals on the Si(111) 7x7 surface

The work is focused on studying of a single silver adatom hopping inside a half unit cell of Si(111)-7×7 reconstruction. It is possible to estimate activation energies and frequency prefactors for hops between particular adsorption sites. It was necessary to make fundamental modifications on a low temperature STM as a part of the work. The modificaations have been made on top of a sample cooling system and on inertial motor for coarse approach of the sample to a tip. The vacuum properties of the STM chamber have been improved. A considerable progress in technology of electrochemically etched tungsten tip preparation has been achieved. Further treatement of the tips has been studied with accent on field emission effect on the tip apex. The 7×7 reconstruction could not be prepared inside the vacuum chamber. Reason is probably a poor degassing of the sample. Further planned experiments could not be performed so far. This thesis contains detailed theoretical analysis of the studying of adsorption sites. The tests of time dependent tunelling spectroscopy method are described in results.
Study of CeOx / Rh inverse catalyst

RNDr. Václav Nehasil, Dr., Department of Surface and Plasma Science Abstract: Inverse catalysts of cerium oxide deposited on polycrystalline and monocrystalline (111) rhodium substrates were studied by means of surface science experimental methods. Growth characteristics of cerium oxide were investigated in dependence on deposition conditions and different thickness determination methods were compared. Acording to oxidizing or reducing exposition conditions changes in degree of oxidation of CeOX were observed. Further spectra analysis showed additional Ce-Rh alloy formation. Adsorption positions CO on-top and CO hollow on Rh (111) surface were differentiated by spectra fitting procedures. Oxygen absorption and reverse desorption in CeOX was confirmed. Performed experiments indicate that this process occurs through oxide-metal interface. CO oxidation reaction mechanisms at room temperature were proposed. Cerium oxide presence is necessary for reaction occurrence. Significant influence of deposited CeOX on proposed CO oxidation reaction mechanisms was proved by this way. RNDr. Václav Nehasil, Dr., Department of Surface and Plasma Science Abstract: Bimetallic system Sn-Rh in the form of the model Sn/Rh(111) system, supported Rh+Sn/Al2O3 and Rh/SnO2 clusters and Rh/SnO2 and Rh+Sn/Al2O3 powder samples was studied using synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), molecular beams (MB), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high pressure reactor within the framework of the study. It was found that formation of Sn-Rh alloy influences catalytic properties of Rh by lowering CO adsorption energy and capacity. It was also found that presence of Rh in this bimetallic system mediates reversible oxidation/reduction of Sn/SnO2, whereas Sn oxide acts as an oxygen reservoir for low temperature CO oxidation. Laboratory Study of Field Ion Emission from Dust Grain

Title: Laboratory study of field ion emission from dust grains Author: Martin Jeřáb Department: Department of Surface and Plasma Science Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Jana Šafránková, DrSc., KFPP Abstract: Dust particles are common objects in space environment. As a dust particles, we call objects with typical sizes of several atoms up to approximately 100 µm. However, a total mass of dust particles is only about 1% of total mass of our galaxy, the presence of dust particles significantly affects environment. The most interesting is dynamics of dust particles and attached dust charging processes. The presented thesis consists of two main parts. The first part deals with the experimental study of field ion emission. Our measurements have been performed using gold and carbon spherical dust grains. It has been found that during the charging of dust particle using ion gun are the primary ions implanted under the surface of the dust particle from where they are release in the form of neutral gas. This releasing of implanted ions affects field ion emission for several hours. The second part of the thesis describes a development of new experimental apparatus determined to the study of photoemission dust charging and con- sequently to the "true" field ion emission study. Physically chemical properties of epitaxial films CeO2/Cu(110)

In this work ways of preparation of thin epitaxial cerium oxide film on Cu(110) surface were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray photoelectron difraction (XPD), low energy electron difraction (LEED), ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used for the characterization of prepared systems. The island structure of CeO2 was prepared by the method of reactive evaporation in oxygen atmosphere. The influence of temperature on the electronic structure and morphology was studied. At the temperature above 550 ˚C partial reduction to Ce2O3 and reordering of the islands to the CeO2(331) structure was observed. The ceria promoted oxidation of copper surface was approved, since the clean c(6x2) reconstruction of the surface was observed at the oxygen exposure 1,5 order of magnitude lower then on Cu(110) alone. The other model system was prepared by cerium evaporation to the oxygen precovered Cu(110) surface. The mix of (2x1) and c(6x2) surface reconstruction was formed by oxygen exposition at 300 ˚C. Cerium was deposited on this surface, also at 300 ˚C. During the following heating to 500 ˚C the formation of epitaxial film Ce2O3(0001) was observed, accompanied by the formation of large hundreds nm long smooth band structures in the [11̄0] direction.
Reactivity of transition metals - influence of the degree of oxidation of active substrate

The impacts of fluorine doping of ceria are studied by means of surface science experimental methods. Fluorine-doped and fluorine-free ceria layers are epitaxially grown on rhodium single crystals and their properties are compared in regular and inverse catalyst configurations. A procedure for epitaxial growth of CeO2(110) and CeOxFy(110) layers on Rh(110) single crystal is developed and described in detail. Shape alterations of Ce 3d spectrum brought about by fluorine doping are explained and a suitable deconvolution method is proposed. Special attention is focused towards stability of fluorine in ceria. Presented data show that fluorine incorporation in ceria lattice causes stable reduction of ceria, which withstands up to 200řC in near-ambient pressure conditions. Morphological changes are observed due to elongation of surface lattice constant of reduced ceria. Oxygen storage capacities and hydrogen oxidation reaction rates of four different studied systems are compared and discussed. The twofold nature of oxygen exposure of fluorinated ceria is discovered and explained. Oxygen repels fluorine from the surface, while the remaining part of fluorine is expelled to adsorbate positions, where its electronic state is altered.
