Revitalisation of post-mining sites
Veselý, Martin ; Chuman, Tomáš (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
This work introduces and compares some basic facts about recultivation and alternative methods of restoration, such is revitalization and natural succession. Recultivation is the way of quick revegetation, but it's expensive and in many cases contraproductive considering biodiversity of recultivated sites. Whereas, approaches based on principles of ecological restoration have many positives. They can create much valuable landscape structures and ecosystems than recultivation, and they enhance biodiversity and conservation of rare species.
Assessment of the impact of wind calamity from November 19, 2004 on the nature of the High Tatra Mountains
Vosátková, Veronika ; Lipský, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this study is to bring a light into the situation of wind calamity which happened 19.11.2004. After the physicographical analysis of this locality, I will try to bring the whole picture of this catastrophe, its causes and mostly consequences left on the tatra nature. I will pay special attention to regeneration of the country and following steps in dealing with this calamity because of two different opinions on the picture of Tatras. Finally, I will discuss future progress in Tatra mountains and i will try to answer the question, whether was a worse catastrophe a wind calamity or human intervention in this locality afterwards.
The environmental literacy testing of primary school pupils and lower grade of secondary school students
Kasková, Barbora ; Matějček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučerová, Silvie Rita (referee)
11 ABSTRACT The study reported in this paper was undertaken during autumn 2007 to assess the status of environmental education and awareness of eight-formers living in chosen localities of a different population range. The main objectives of the study were to determine the depth of pupils' knowledge and awareness of environmental issues and problems and their attitude to the environment. Is there a certain homogeneity of environmental awareness and attitudes among most schoolchildren at village, town and the capital? To test the veracity or otherwise of this widely held assumption. The study comprised a detailed questionnaire of a sample of 324 schoolchildren. The study was designed to assess the general characteristics, environmental knowledge, and behavioural pattern of the sample. The research finding in the study indicated that positons of pupils result mainly from all-society views and less reverberate thein own experiences. Informants cann`t context aglomerated enviromental problems with the others global ones yet and they perceive them separately. Only few informats are able to answer what a global problem means. Also a few of them can concretely enumerace just one of the global problems. Lesser of them have awareness of a sustainable growth. Absolute majority of them identify thein selfs with...
Assesment of land use influence on landscape naturalness
Kaňková, Helena ; Romportl, Dušan (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
1 Assesment of land use influence on landscape naturalness Abstract Human activities are putting an increasing pressure on natural areas. Complex understanding and evaluation of human impact on the environment is considered to be a key tool to preserve natural balance. Biodiversity was chosen as proxy for naturalness as it has been recognized as one of the main components of environmental stability. Several different indices has been developed to assess human-induced changes in biodiversity. In this study, mean abundance of original species relative to their abundance in undisturbed ecosystems (MSA) is used as an indicator for current state of naturalness. Indicator MSA is built on simple cause-effect relationships between environmental drivers and biodiversity impacts, based on state-of-the-art knowledge. Drivers considered are landcover change, land-use intensity, fragmentation and infrastructure development. As most of biodiversity indices, MSA illustrate prevailingly poor condition of nature as a result of human induced pressures, especially land cover change. Considering constantly increasing population and economic development human pressure grow is likely to continue during the coming decades with irreversible loss in the diversity of life on the Earth. Keywords: Mean species abundance (MSA) - land...

The comparation of world protected areas
Hrdina, Aleš ; Matějček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šenová, Vendula (referee)
This thesis deals with the origin and development of protected areas, conservation organisations and systems of protected area management categories. It focuses on the 1994 system and its modification in 2008. The categories are defined and compared. Development of the number and area of protected areas and national parks in the world is studied, and also pros and weaknesses of the system of protected area management categories. The main objective is to create a database of national parks in the world, which includes the 3,227 areas, having an area of over 5,000,000 square kilometers.
