Knihovnička úderníků: Semiotic Analysis, Narrative Strategies, Context, Kitsch

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the Knihovnička úderníků series published between 1949 and 1956 by the Práce publishing house. The series comprised of 69 publications (including professional literary reportages and biographies) about shock-workers, the fifties "symbolic heroes". Given the fact that the books are not well-known, the thesis deals with the texts from different points of view to provide an overview of the series. The approach has been predominantly synchronic with a few exceptions, e.g. contextualizing the series at the beginning of the thesis. Considering the high number of the texts, the author finds it useful to delimit main functions of the texts and to find their common features. One of the main goals of the thesis is to perform a semiotic analysis of myths, emblems and rituals which occur in the works and which socialistic cultural mythology is comprised of. In this chapter Vladimír Macura's methodological approach is being used. The texts are also analysed in terms of composition as well as narrative strategies with focus on (pseudo-)autobiography. The last part of the thesis deals with kitsch. Phenomenon of Tramping in Czech Literature

(English): The dissertation analyses the literature of subculture of tramping, its peculiarity and impact on Czech society during the era of the so called first republic. It deals with significant turning points of the genesis of this cultural phenomenon and utilizes them for the text interpretation. It also strives to express different possibilities of reception of its literature which germinated from tramping.

Zkáza lidství - synthesis of dystopia, apokalypse and mysticism

Bachelor thesis focuses on detailed description and thorough analysis of an unusual science fiction novel Zkaza lidstvi by a czech unknown author Josef Akana. The novel (written in 1928) seems to be rather problematic to classify, since it borderlines across various genres such as science fiction, utopia and apocalypse which are represented in the opening chapters. This bachelor thesis analyses the tendency of czech interwar literature, summarizes real war threat common themes and reflects general concerns about social development which also happened to be extremely emphasized in the literature of twenties. Rebellious Female Protagonists in Young Adult Dystopian Novels

The thesis is mainly concerned with popular dystopian book series Hunger Games and Divergent. The aim of the present diploma thesis is to summarize representative characteristics of a young adult dystopian novels featuring rebellious female heroes and to closely examine the social context of the aforementioned novels. The first part of the thesis is based on the analysis of young adult dystopian novels and the attitude of young female readers to the representation of strong female protagonists in literature. The second part od this thesis presents a qualitative research realized by interviews with young female readers and it attempts to answer the research questions about the attitude of readers to examined dystopian novels and the contemporary social role of women. The Tabloid's development in Czech Countries

This thesis describes the beginnings of tabloid dairies in Czech countries. In addition to the overall analysis of the monitored titles, thesis offers a comprehensive look at the issue of tabloid newspapers, its characteristics and its inclusion to the popular culture. The research period is from 1879 to 1939. Thesis describes the socio-cultural character studied period, which led to the formation of the first tabloid newspaper. We compare the development of Czech tabloid dairies with the development of those newspapers in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, France and the USA. We compare the tabloid also with serious contemporary newspapers. Results of this work is the periodization of Tabloid paper at the Czech territory, its character, the mutual differences and character of its readers.

Prague Illustrated Courier: The Prague Penny-press as a Window into the World of Commeon Men.

- Jakub Machek Prague Illustrated Courier. The Prague Penny-press as a Window into the World of Common Men. This work is dedicated to early sensational pictorial press (Pražský Illustrovaný Kurýr and its less successful predecessors) and its urban readers, as an example of the rising Fin de siècle popular culture in the Czech lands and its significance for revealing fundamental social and political changes that took place at the turn of the 20th century. During this era, even the members of lower social classes broadened their economical and cultural potency and thus capacity to absorb the development of new common culture generated by the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Production and reception of emerging popular press is analysed as a marker of the new modern urban experience and its social influences. Global pattern of successful mass daily press was, however, modified for Prague audience, its specific local beliefs, values and desires, distinctively different from those of western urban centre dwellers.
