Elementary school pupils' misconceptions related to the thematic map use

The thesis deals with identification and analysis of misconceptions that are formed when the ninth grade pupils work with thematic maps. It is divided into two main parts. The first part, which is theoretical, informs the readers about the aims of the thesis and defines the fundamental terms on the basis of the literature review. The misconceptions in thematic cartography are described in detail as well as the methodology of the research. The phenomenographic interview was used as a method for collecting qualitative data in order to fulfil the established aim. The research was realized in five schools situated in Ústecký region, in Děčín district, with twenty pupils. More specifically, the research aim was to find out whether there exists, and if so, then what is the impact of pupils' orientation in elementary geographic knowledge, used cartographic method and correctness of thematic map on pupils' conceptions. Elementary school pupils' misconceptions related to choropleth and proportional symbol maps

The diploma thesis deals with the identification and analysis of misconceptions that are formed when the ninth grade pupils work with thematic maps of quantitative mapping methods, specifically with the choropleth map and proportional symbol map. The theoretical introduction defines the tested mapping methods, reviews previous foreign and Czech studies of map skills, and describes misconceptions that are formed both in cartography in general and specifically when working with thematic maps of quantitative mapping methods. The theoretical part is followed by the practical part - the research methodology and the design of an open conceptual test itself. The test is compiled according to the concept map, which was based on the literature review of previous empirical studies and theoretical publications. From the conceptual map eight propositions (statements) that are key to understanding the concept of choropleth map and proportional symbol map were determined based on an expert evaluation. The conceptual test was used to reveal misconceptions that are formed when working with these mapping methods. Drought as a topic in geography teaching

The diploma thesis deals with the teaching of the issue of drought, which in recent years has significantly affected the territory of the Czechia. With the ongoing climate change, it is necessary to prepare for more significant extremes of weather, which will be demonstrate by the longer periods of droughts, which consequences will be highlight by inappropriate anthropogenic interventions and improper water management. Therefore, it is important to include this issue in school education, so that students realize that our territory is also endangered by this problem, what are its causes and that they themselves can contribute to their mitigation. The main aim of this thesis is to create a model teaching dealing with the issue of drought. The questionnaire survey found out that major part of teachers devotes at least part of the lessons to the topic and that the main cause of non-devotion is lack of time and fear of incorrect grasping of the topic. A number of respondents were contacted based on the questionnaire survey, with whom semi-structured interviews were organized in order to obtain more detailed information and obtain examples of good practice. The diploma thesis deals with distance teaching, in empiric part of the thesis specifically with distance teaching of geography in spring of 2020 at secondary schools and appropriate degree of grammar schools. The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe specifics of distance teaching of geography at secondary schools and appropriate degree of grammar schools in spring of 2020 and to make a list of principles which should be followed in distance teaching and which should help with adjustment of learning content. for needs of distance teaching. The role of education in the process of development of poor countries Abstract The aim of this thesis is to discuss the role of education in the process of development of poor countries. The thesis is divided into two sections. The first, introductory section, attempts to illustrate the relationship between education and development at the global level. The current state of global education, including the development of selected global initiatives on education, is evaluated quantitatively. Introductory section also highlights the connection between education and individual indicators of development. The second section which is the main part of the work focuses on discussing and evaluating knowledge gained through research of scientific literature on "micro-mechanisms" underlying and explaining "macro-relations" between education and development discussed in the first section of the work. The main identified mechanisms can be divided into the following areas: economic behavior, demographic behavior, health quality, gender inequality, the implementation and use of technology in agriculture, environmental behavior, and migration. The teaching of regional geography in Montessori schools

The teaching of regional geography in Montessori schools Abstract The goal of this thesis is to present the importance and position of the curriculum of regional geography and to analyze the approaches to teaching methods of regional geography, which are used in Montessori schools in the Czech Republic and are applicable in teaching geography in other types of schools. Specifically, we study pupils in the higher grades of primary schools and the lower grades of a grammar school. The work deals with this topic in two main parts. The first theoretical part is devoted to familiarization with the history of regional geography as a scientific discipline and, subsequently, with the functions and subject of study of regional geography in general. The next section deals with the curriculum and teaching of regional geography. At the end of the theoretical part, there are chapters devoted to Montessori education and methodology utilized in this thesis. The second part summerizes results of qualitative research, including the method of semi-structured interviews with teachers of regional geography and participatory observations in classes. The use of stories in Geography textbooks

This bachelor thesis, as the title suggests, discusses stories and passages from literature pieces found in Czech geography textbooks and worksheets. These texts are assessed according to their school-based education involvement, as suggested in the textbook. Next, it is evaluated which cognitive processes are developed in pupils and students by these questions and tasks, which are included in respective texts. This research is supported by the theoretical part which, while using literature resources, elaborates on integrated education in the Czech education system, information from abroad is added as well. This part discusses mainly assumptions for integrated education, its advantages, benefits, and inspiration or motivation to further student education. Special attention is given to the integration of Geography and Literature education. This thesis further elaborates on narrative pedagogy, where the benefits of using stories in education are summarized.
