Between Aussig and Regensburg - an Insight into the Life of an Upper- Class Bourgeois German Family in Czechoslovakia and in the Post-War Germany (1918-1948)
Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The "völkische Weltanschauung" of the German Gymnastic Unions and the Strategies of its Propagation
Klement, Martin ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Skřivan, Aleš (referee) ; Kaiserová, Kristina (referee)
In the Austrian-Hungarian, ethnically German gymnastic unions of "Deutscher Turnerbund" and "Turnkreis Deutsch-Österreich", between the late 1880s and 1918 there was an officially propagandized set of racial, nationalistic and religiously-ethical opinions known in the German literature as the "völkische Weltanschauung". This propaganda was also seen after the World War I in the Austrian union of "Deutscher Turnerbund 1919", in the union of "Deutscher Turnverband" which used to exist in the Czechoslovakia and in some segments of the German union of "Deutsche Turnerschaft". Using the newest search results, archival sources and until now predominantly ignored literature (e.g. unions periodicals, educational booklets and novels), this dissertation applies the analytic-synthetic and comparatively orientated method to answer the questions, which ideas the "völkische Weltanschauung" was consisted of, who formulated them and how they have been developed over time. Special attention is payed to the principles and effectiveness of the educational institutions (the so- called institution of the "Dietwarte"), fiction literature, periodicals and festivities in the process of the indoctrination of the young and old gymnasts. For the breadth of themes and the distinction between the official unions...
German Technical University in Prague 1938 - 1945
Josefovičová, Milena ; Míšková, Alena (advisor) ; Janko, Jan (referee) ; Kaiserová, Kristina (referee)
The German Technical University in Prague 1938-1945 Investigation into the history of the Prague German Technical University broadens our knowledge not only of higher education, but also of the standing and education of the German population on Czech territory. Technical education, thought and inventiveness as phenomena of the industrial revolution gradually increase in importance with regard to overall social development. The 1938-1945 period, fundamentally different from previous periods, marked by Munich, the occupation, the war, the tragic culmination of Czech-German relations, came to be an inglorious concluding chapter to the existence of the Prague German Technical University, which began in 1806. The development of institutes of higher technical education within the Third Reich forms an important context for this research. This is where historiography first gets to grips with the complex of associated questions, from the privileging of technical subjects by the Nazi regime to the employment of technical elites and their participation in military research. The proposition that Nazism was hostile towards science leads on to further considerations, such as the place of technical science and technical colleges in the Third Reich, the role which they played and the results achieved by Nazi...
Faith, reason and experience in the popular medicine of late-medieval Bohemia
Tomíček, David ; Říhová, Milada (advisor) ; Spunar, Pavel (referee) ; Kaiserová, Kristina (referee)
The thesis was created in connection with a previous study of Czech printed medical literature from the 16th century. For the purposes of the thesis I newly focused on medical manuscripts written in the 15th and the 16th century, which I consider to be a unique resource for understanding of the popular medicine. Chosen Czech written texts represent a boundary field, the mix of popular therapy and learned medicine. There were two dominant aetiologic conceptions in the medieval period: a) medical one, b) religious one. According the first one, a cause of illness was viewed as an imbalance of humours. According the religious conception, a cause of illness was considered to be supernatural: either God or devil. I expected lots of manifestations of second conception (prayer, fasting, ritual or other magical acts) and stress on experience in our manuscript sources. It is hard to discern whether we deal with licit religious act or with illicit magic in certain examples, but there are some clues. Firstly, the evidence of magic might be a strong confidence in ritual itself. Secondly, we can observe both laws of sympathetic magic in our manuscripts. I formulated three questions during my research: a) The lack of theoretical knowledge in popular medicine had to be necessarily compensated by some other factors. If it...

Králová, Kateřina ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Hladký, Ladislav (referee) ; Kaiserová, Kristina (referee)
The doctoral thesis Reconciling with Nazi Past and the Greek-German Relations is a historical study of the Greek-German relations in the Cold War era and after the reunification of Germany. Its main objective is to bring new insights into the topic of the legacy of Nazi occupation in Greece, with a particular focus on the prosecution of Nazi perpetrators and the related crime compensation for civilian victims. These problems are examined from a political, socio-cultural, economic as well as legal perspective.
