Residents' Perceptions of Gentrification and Related Changes: a Study of Smíchov and Karlín
Columby, Nikola ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Gentrification is an urban process gone global with many permutations and local specifics. This master's thesis analyses how residents are perceiving gentrification in rapidly developing, post- industrial, inner-city neighbourhoods of Prague - Smíchov and Karlín. The thesis is based on the concept of gentrification as planetary phenomenon that is anchored in a post-socialist context of contemporary Prague. The integral process of displacement is understood as direct but also symbolic, as an attachment to one's neighbourhood. Perception, an individual's filter of understanding and dealing with the world, is used to capture nuances, experiences, and feelings. Using interviews, the thesis seeks to answer the following questions using the underutilized perceptions of regular citizens. How are residents perceiving gentrification and the related changes? Where are residents placing gentrification? Are these findings the same in Smíchov and Karlín or are there differences in the perceptions? Gentrification and displacement are palpable urban processes that the respondents perceive as having changed the neighbourhoods in an impactful way. Karlín is seen as gentrified, whereas in Smíchov the situation is more nuanced. The group most clearly identified as being displaced are the Roma. The gentrifiers are...
Transport mechanisms of secondary metabolites across membranes of plant cells
Kubeš, Jan ; Tůmová, Lenka (advisor) ; Babula, Petr (referee) ; Obložinský, Marek (referee)
Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Charles University Department of pharmacognosy Candidate: Mgr. Jan Kubeš Supervisor: PharmDr. Lenka Tůmová, CSc. Title of Doctoral thesis: Transport mechanisms of secondary metabolites across membranes of plant cells An attention was focused on the metabolism of isoflavones in recent years, including their transport within plants and cultures in vitro. A research is focused on the transport mechanism identification across cell or vacuolar membrane. There are localized different transporters as or the transport of some metabolites can take place through membrane vesicules. The release of five isoflavones (genistin, genistein, biochanin A, daidzein and formononetin) into nutrient medium was observed in suspension culture of Genista tinctoria L and Trifolium pratense L. These cultures were treated with NH4VO3 solutions (1 a 10 M concentration) when isoflavon content in medium was higher after 24 hours. This increased volume of isoflavones was supressed by different transport mechanism inhibitors. The transport of isoflavones in T. pratense was influenced by ABC inhibitors from MRP subfamily, but genistein concentration in medium was lower after treatment with MDR subfamily inhibitors. Brefeldin A, which blocks vesicular transport, also decreased concentration of...
The development of housing policy in Písek after 1989 and its impact on residental differentiation and segregation
Jindrová, Veronika ; Matoušek, Roman (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on the development of housing policy in Písek after 1989 and its impact on residential differentiation and segregation. Rašín, Robin ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Kupková, Lucie (referee) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Charles University in Prague Faculty of Science Department of Social Geography and Regional Development Robin Rašín The Landscape of the Czech-Austrian Borderland: Development and Heritage Summary Roztoky u Křivoklátu 2010 1 Landscape is a key geographical concept and geographical research on land change and land use has a tradition that can be dated back for almost a hundred years. The development of the subject orientation of land change science can be divided into two phases. (i) During the first phase (50's/60's of the 20th century) the description of landscape and its morphology (structure) were at the centre of research interest along with the research of the potential for agro-production. This particular type of study was motivated by the need to find a solution to the problem of the increasing inability to supply a growing (European) population with agricultural products. (ii) In the second phase (circa from 70's of the 20th century), the attention of scientists towards the accelerated rate of land change on a global scale that can be associated with: the increase of human population, changes in agricultural techniques, mining, environmental exploitation et cetera. There is an obvious need to solve the negative impacts of the human activities on the landscape at different scales (from local to...
Residential satisfaction of households in tenement houses in localities of Prague - the role of civic amenities
Bursa, Otakar ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Residential satisfaction belongs to important elements of human's satisfaction with life. It is created by the unique set of different components to which the accessibility and quality of civic amenities in a neighbourhood may also be included. Nevertheless, the importance of this factor used to be underestimated and the real connexion between residential satisfaction and the presence of civic amenities has not come out so far (Swindell, Kelly 2005). Therefore, the diploma thesis focuses on the qualitative- analytical research of residential satisfaction in two differently served Prague's localities with the aim to deepen the current knowledge of this issue. The results show that the presence of civic amenities in the neighbourhood has a significant effect in creating residential satisfaction which is comparable to the quality of housing and neighbourhood features. However, this relationship is partly influenced by the assigned importance of services' presence that especially varies according to the locality type (housing estate or suburban) and the position of household in a life cycle. Keywords: residential satisfaction, civic amenities, Prague, housing estate, suburb
Population development and current migration tendencies of rural municipalities of South Bohemia
Edelmanová, Denisa ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Transformation of Czech society after 1989 caused changes in spatial migration patterns. After strong socialist urbanization and during post-socialist suburbanization, people also began to move from towns to more remote rural areas. The subject of the thesis is the evaluation of the rural area of South Bohemia in terms of changes in its population and migration development in 1992-2017. Firstly, the thesis briefly analyzes the long-term population development of individual municipalities with extended power of South Bohemia in the context of the whole Czechia and then analyzes the types (positional and size) of rural municipalities of South Bohemia when solving their population growth, stagnation or depopulation and reveals the role of natural currency and migration balance in this population development. The main part of the thesis is an analysis of the internal migration of municipalities of South Bohemia in 1992-2017, namely migration flows between rural municipalities (semi-peripheral and peripheral) on the one hand and urban regions, including core towns (important and less important) and surrounding suburban municipalities, on the second hand. The main aim of the thesis is research the counterurbanization of South Bohemia based on the above mentioned migration flows. Especially after 1997,...
Double taxation treaties with particular regard to the concept of a permanent establishment
Kubeš, Jan ; Vybíral, Roman (advisor) ; Sejkora, Tomáš (referee)
01 Double tax treaties aim to prevent double taxation. Double taxation of income is an undesirable phenomenon from the taxpayers' point of view. The most widespread way of preventing it is through bilateral agreements concluded between states under the OECD Model Agreement. In general, a prerequisite of taxation is either tax residency or the existence of a permanent establishment, which can take various forms. Double taxation treaties and the concept of a permanent establishment in which this master thesis is dedicated, have undergone a dynamic transformation over the past few years due to both Base Erosion and Profit Shifting reports (BEPS) and the Multilateral Instrument by OECD (MLI). This transformation is demonstrated in this thesis by comparing selected provisions of the OECD Model Agreement 2014 and 2017. This thesis addresses the current question of whether the current development of tax treaties is to avoid double taxation or avoid double non-taxation and artificial tax reduction. Double tax treaties, as practice shows, fulfill their traditional role. The first chapter deals with the system of national and international taxation in general. The second chapter deals with the issue of double taxation, methods of its avoidance and comparison of versions of the OECD Model Agreement 2014 and 2017. The...
