Hána, Petr ; Jirásková, Věra (referee) ; Havlůjová, Hana (referee)
1950s may be classified as one of the worst periods in Czechoslovakia's history. The totalitarian communist regime in the period between 1948 and 1953 is called the Stalinism. The primary objective hereof was to evaluate teaching about the Stalinism period in Czechoslovakia in secondary schools, in particular, to assess the scope of correctness and completeness of the related curriculum and teaching methods. The secondary objective hereof was to introduce and describe the Stalinism as a typical example of totalitarianism and to define crucial elements of this non-democratic form of government using the example of Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1953. The thesis proceeds from the theoretical part via a case study to the practical part. The first part classifies totalitarianism, defines its historical outset and determines its main features. Havlůjová, Hana ; Míšková, Alena (advisor) ; Charvát, Petr (referee) ; Bahenská, Marie (referee)
Hana Havlůjová: Czech modern women and the Orient in the first half of the 20th century: Challenging both gender and colonial dichotomies from the margins of Europe Abstract In regards to both Czech and international research context my thesis has two main objectives. Firstly, it aims to explore various Czech sources, be them written or visual, in order to examine their potential for cultural history-based research on Czech modern women's (re)presentations of the Orient in the first half of the 20th century. Secondly, it uses a perspective 'from the margins of Europe' in order to challenge traditional dichotomies that prevail in a majority of research on gender and nationalism as well as colonialism worldwide. Therefore, my analyses of Czech modern women's (re)presentations of the Orient focus mainly on the interplay of three modern discourses - feminism, nationalism and orientalism. The first part of the thesis First impressions: Three Czech modern women in the Orient comprises three case studies on Pavla Dušková, Ludmila Matiegková and Vlasta Kálalová Di- Lotti, who travelled to and stayed in the Near East (Egypt, Palestine, Iraq) in the 1920s and 1930s. Their personal papers (e.g. family correspondence, unpublished travelogues) as well as published works (e.g. academic pieces of writing, popular novels)...

Landscape and people's lives. Region of Poděbrady in the first half of 20th century
Bartošová, Dana ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Havlůjová, Hana (referee)
In my thesis I tried to put down the transformation of rural areas, specifically the region of Poděbrady, which took place in the first half of the 20th century. The center of the region is the town Poděbrady, the whole area consists of 35 municipalities together. The transformation of rural involved several factors - the establishment of an independent republic, land reform, electrification, river regulation, the development of communications, transport and mechanization of agriculture. I deal with the natural conditions of the region, because they greatly influence the local life and economy. "Střední Polabí" is a flat area known for its fertility. Therefore, most people here worked in agriculture in the first half of the 20th century. Major employers were landowners from aristocratic families, particularly in Poděbrady and Dymokury. They gave work to people in the fields and in industrial plants. Breweries, sugar mills, brickworks, dairy, oily or glassworks were in operation in the region. Leisure, customs and festivals belonged also to the life of people.
