The redevelopment of Žižkov at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s
Baklová, Eliška ; Gjuričová, Adéla (advisor) ; Wohlmuth, Petr (referee)
The thesis deals with the refection of the redevelopment of Prague quarter Žižkov at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s in contemporary narratives of the inhabitants of that period. The research uses oral history methods and focuses on subjective perceptions of the accompanying phenomena of the redevelopment, such as the original quality of housing, mental images of the neighbourhood and the displacement of residents. Both from the perspective of those who moved within the neighbourhood and those who had to leave Žižkov. Along with the demolition itself and the transformation of interpersonal relations, the thesis also follows the phenomenon of the construction of housing estates, where many residents from the demolished houses moved. In the synthesizing part, the thesis explores the dimensions of time, gender, nostalgia, and memory of place.
Visions and Building of the Socialist Cities during the Stalin Era (Prague 1948-1956)
Kurz, Michal ; Stehlík, Michal (advisor) ; Biegel, Richard (referee) ; Gjuričová, Adéla (referee)
The dissertation thesis focuses on the contemporary concept of the socialist city in the context of Czechoslovak Stalinism. Using Prague as an example, it examines how this concept was defined in the historical city environment. The aim of the thesis is to reconstruct the process of socialist modernization of Prague in the 1950s, to identify the basic features of the socialist city, to analyze its ideological foundations and to contribute to the discussion on the nature of Czechoslovak Stalinism. The thesis is divided into five main thematic sections. The first conceptualizes the notions of utopia, Stalinism and space. On their basis, it interprets the socialist city as a distinctive vision of modernization. The second section reconstructs the political and symbolic significance of the transformation of space (landscape, cities) within Stalinist modernity. Based on contemporary texts and urban plans, the third section analyses the planning and construction of Prague in the 1950s. It defines the chronology of events, the typology of the implemented projects and the main actor groups that participated in this transformation (politicians, architects, preservationists, journalists, citizens). The fourth part of the thesis explains the roots of the concept of the socialist city in the professional and...
Ecological Protests in Teplice in November 1989: Causes of Public Activis
Menclová, Vendula ; Gjuričová, Adéla (advisor) ; Rádková, Adéla (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the ecological protests that took place between 11th and 13th November in Teplice in November 1989 and their temporal and regional context. The Teplice demonstrations represent an exceptional phenomenon in the pre-November development of Czechoslovakia. It was the first ever manifestation of the dissatisfaction of the population of the then North Bohemian Region with the ecological situation, especially air pollution, with the concealment of information about the state of the environment and thus with the regime itself. On the basis of a comparative analysis of archival sources, the press and interviews with witnesses, the thesis attempts to formulate the causes and factors that spurred the civic activity that eventually grew into the November strikes in Teplice, even though the persistent atmospheric pollution affected the entire North Bohemian region, especially in the 1980 s.
Parliamentary representation in the Czech Republic: deputies and senators in a time of crisis of representative democracy and party government
Jágr, David ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Gjuričová, Adéla (referee) ; Kuta, Martin (referee)
The Czech party system underwent significant reconfiguration in the second decade of the 21st century. The presented research focuses on MPs (deputies) and senators navigating this dynamic environment, specifically examining their perception of the parliamentary mandate. The text describes the representatives' relationships with citizens, parties, and constituencies, and explores changes in these relationships from a long-term perspective. Special attention is given to legislators from new parliamentary groups, especially those who define themselves against the elites and the party government model. These representatives distinguish themselves by emphasising a direct connection with the people and the return of power from the elites to the people, suggesting a different understanding of their mandate. The core of the research covers the parliamentary election period from 2017 to 2021, when half of the Chamber of Deputies consisted of populist movements. Additionally, the research takes into account other political developments and previous studies on Czech parliamentary representatives and debates concerning the crisis of representative democracy. The upper chamber's environment is also examined in detail. The research also addresses the overlooked issue of politics as a profession. An added value...
Forbidden Faith: The so-called Religious Sects and Communist Dictatorship
Pácha, Martin ; Stehlík, Michal (advisor) ; Gjuričová, Adéla (referee) ; Šebek, Jaroslav (referee)
The state-socialist system built after 1948 in Czechoslovakia was characterized by an effort to purposefully secularize society and replace religiosity with an ideological system based on the values of Marxism-Leninism. The repressive measures gradually affected all religious organizations, but not all of them equally. A specific category was constituted by religious groups, which the communist discourse defined as "sects." These were repeatedly placed in existential danger because they were outside the contemporary notion of "normal" religion. The dissertation uses the example of two such communities (the Pentecostal Movement, the Jehovah's Witnesses Religious Society) to analyse the interactions of religious actors with state representatives. The thesis demonstrates that the state's atheization strategies did not produce an atheistic society and, using the concept of the religious field, created a disjunctive space at the intersection of religion-culture-politics in which various believers were forced to modify their spiritual practices, but certainly did not become dominated passive bystanders. Similarly, the state administration did not remain static, and its activities gradually diversified according to the specificities of a given religious group. The thesis concludes that the state did not...
Homo Sapiens or Homo Brutalis? Psychiatric Knowledge, Violence and Crime in Postwar Czechoslovakia, West Germany and Great Britain (1945-1970)
Střelec, Jakub ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Gjuričová, Adéla (referee) ; Zimmermann, Volker (referee)
The thesis deals with forensic psychiatry and violent crime in post-war Europe. It focuses on the changing perception of violent behaviour in psychiatric knowledge and its use in the assessments of violent crime in Czechoslovakia, West Germany, and the United Kingdom between 1945 and 1970. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of expert knowledge about human behaviour in the various post-war modernisation projects. The thesis begins by analysing the development of legal concepts of criminal responsibility and the role of psychiatrists as expert witnesses in court. The thesis is then divided into two main parts. The first part examines psychiatric knowledge about violence and crime through an analysis of articles and publications written by psychiatrists and other experts in the post-war period. It focuses on similarities and differences in psychiatric knowledge on both sides of the Iron Curtain, and on different interpretations of violent and aggressive behaviour. The second part studies psychiatric assessments of violent crimes in court, using selected case studies. It examines the impact of the war on domestic violence, infanticide, sexual homicide, and ethnicity and violent crime. The thesis is based on a comparative approach and combines the analysis of...

Through the labyrinth of revolution. The actors, plots and intersections of a political crisis (from November 1989 to June 1990)
Cena kvalitních studií - většinou politologické provenience - spočívá v neotřelých postřezích, v odhalování zajímavých analogií, totožností i rozdílů. Inspirativní i provokativní teze podněcují diskusi, vybízejí k souhlasné i nesouhlasné reakci.
