Medea by Pavel Vranicky. A musical travesty
Kadlec, Daniel ; Niubo, Marc (advisor) ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on Medea, a stage work by Paul Wranitzky (1756-1808). Based on the study of historical musical sources and drawing on scientific literature it offers a detailed image of this travesty (or parody) of Georg Anton Benda's (1722-1795) melodrama Medea. The thesis describes the parameters of the work, compares the work with its model and puts it into the context of the contemporary Viennese so called "popular" theater. It also explores the influence which empress Marie Therese of Naples and Sicily had on its creation. The empress acted as a patron and collector of music and she fostered an intensive musical culture at her court. The analytical part deals with the text and the music of Medea and the techniques used therein to achieve parodic and comical effects.
Incantation. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4, H 358by Bohuslav Martinů
Kalina Tabak, Ivana ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Rentsch, Ivana (referee) ; Flašar, Martin (referee)
Incantation. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4, H 358 by Bohuslav Martinů holds significant importance in his oeuvre and remains frequently performed. Composed during his last stay in the United States between 1955 and 1956, it exemplifies the "fantasy" creative period of Martinů's mature work. The composition was commissioned by Fromm Music Foundation, nevertheless Martinů composed it for his close friend, the renowned pianist Rudolf Firkušný. The pianist gave its first performance in New York the very year it was completed and subsequently had exclusive interpretation rights to it. During the composer's lifetime, Firkušný performed the work a total of six times in America and Europe. However, Martinů did not have opportunity to be witness of its live performance, nor did he participate in a preparation for the release of the piece, as its publication was postponed due to the continuing rights of the pianist as well as due to prioritizing the release of another composer's work. The first and until recently only printed edition of Incantation was published in 1970 by the Bärenreiter-Verlag Kassel. The research examines and evaluates the composition from various perspectives, including its historical context, theoretical and analytical aspects, and editorial concerns. The main practical task...

Kovářová, Adéla ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kachlík, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis is concerned with the symphonic poem Praga, Op. 26 composed by Josef Suk in 1904 in need to create a music image of Prague at the turn of the 19th and the 20th century. The thesis deals with the current research and literature situation and it presents Suk as a composer and a musician at the turn of the century. The crucial part of the thesis informs about circumstances of Praga's origin, its premieres, publication and reviews in newspapers at the beginning of the 20th century. It is particularly concerned with the description of the form and the analysis of Suk's composition. In following two chapters, Praga is set into a broader context. The first of them describes the city of Prague and its depiction in artworks at the turn of the 19th and the 20th century. The second contextual chapter discusses Suk's symphonic poem in the connection with the Hussite movement tradition formed at that time and with a Hussite song Kdož jste boží bojovníci (Ye Who Are God's Warriors) infiltrating into the awareness of the cultured and educated society during the 19th century.

Myslivcová, Eva ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kachlík, Jan (referee)
The goal of the submitted work is to find out and to evaluate the state of sources connected with Antonín Dvořák's personal artistic contacts as well as with reception of his artwork and his figure in the regions set in the introduction of this work and by the concept of Liberec region in general. The first chapter named "State of Research" brings along with other information also the report on discovering two copies of letters completely unknown until now in the section named "Sources". Antonín Dvořák addressed these letters to Alois Göbl to Sychrov. The next chapter is dedicated to Turnov region and to his concert in Semily. This chapter summarizes already well known information about Dvořák's visits in this region; as well as it expands our knowledge based on unpublished sources from the archive of the choir named Antonín Dvořák, and also from Museum of Český Ráj both located in Turnov. The last chapter focuses on other regions stated in the introduction; the sources based on this theme were expected to be relatively smaller after the very first look at the problem. Key words Antonín Dvořák; Alois Göbl; Otilie Dvořáková; Bohuslav Finke; Josef Kuhn; František Čepelík; Kajetán Tichý; Antonín Horáček; Choir Antonín Dvořák in Turnov; Turnov; Sychrov; Semily; Liberec/Reichenberg; Jablonec nad...

Species traits of critically endangered vascular plant species of the Czech Republic
Gabrielová, Jarmila ; Münzbergová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Mihulka, Stanislav (referee)
Understanding factors responsible for species rarity is crucial for their effective conservation. Do rare and endangered species posses any specific traits, which differentiate them from species that are common and which could be the cause of their rarity and endangerment? To answer this question, I analyzed biological and ecological traits of critically endangered plant species of the Czech Republic (CR category of the Red list of vascular plant species, Procházka 2001). I compared vegetative, generative and ecological traits of CR species with traits of species that are closely related but common (due to phylogenetic correction), with common closely related species from the same habitat (because many differences in species traits can be caused by adaptation to specific habitat type) and with traits of all plants of the Czech Republic. Information about species traits was mainly obtained from literature and databases; a small part was assessed experimentally. The comparison with closely related common species have shown that CR species are smaller, flower for shorter period, have higher proportion of autocompatibility and higher terminal velocity. CR species differ also in the mode of dispersion, in ecological traits and in traits connected with distribution (lower proportion of cstrategy, greater...
The position of Sophien-akademie in the 19th century Prague musical life: concert activities in the period 1841-1850
Matějčková, Helena ; Ottlová, Marta (advisor) ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (referee)
Thesis concentrates on listing concerts, musical events and other performances of Prague music society Žofínská akademie [Sophian Academy] in the period 184150. Concert Overtures Nature, Life, and Love op. 91-93 by Antonín Dvořák
Myslivcová, Eva ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Ottlová, Marta (referee)
The submitted thesis deals with Antonín Dvořák's trilogy of concert overtures Nature, Life and Love, Op. 91-93. After summarising the current state of research in existing literature followed by the overview of music and non-musical sources, the overture - and mainly concert overture - is depicted as a music genre and Antonín Dvořák's overtures are presented in general. Integral element of the thesis is a summarization of circumstances of the given works' origin and thus also putting them into the context of composer's oeuvre. However the focus of the thesis lies in a musical-analytical insight into each of the three overtures (In Nature's Realm, Op. 91 [B 168], Carnival, Op. 92 [B 169], Othello, Op. 93 [B 174]), where the author also takes their existing analyses into account and pays attention to their genesis according to the sources. Key words Antonín Dvořák, Concert ouverture
Prague reception of Smetana's operas 1884-1900
