Railways in physics education
Růžička, Adam ; Kekule, Tomáš (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
The bachelor thesis presents railway phenomena and technical applications through grammar school physic. The underlying physical principles are easily visible to the ordinary eye when travelling by train. These phenomena can then be divided into mechanical, including thermal phenomena, and electrical. The work is written as a teacher's guide for physic classes, or rather a sort of stock of knowledge that can be refer to as practical examples. At the same time, the work is also designed for students who can read the text on his own, or for the less instructed interested in the subject.
Outreach of an Exoplanet Research and the PLATO Space Mission in the Czech Republic
Dupkala, Daniel ; Drozd, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kolář, Petr (referee)
The extrasolar planets have become one of the most exciting and promising research fields in modern astronomy. They could reveal the answers to some of the biggest questions such as the origin of life, planetary evolution, or the existence of extraterrestrial life in the universe. Exoplanets also present a unique option for scientific outreach as they are easy to imagine and understand. In this thesis, the current research, its history, and future plans are described with a focus on Czech participation in it. Especially the PLATO mission will give the Czech Republic a front seat in exoplanetary science. Various outreach activities are presented both conducted by the author and proposed for the future. A special focus was given to the work with talented high school students. Three activities were organized with the aim to present the research on the exoplanets to students and to give them the opportunity to try and participate in it. These activities covered the area of astronomical observations, the analysis of the light curves from the transit photometry, and finally the data processing of the stellar spectra for the radial velocity measurements. The activities were evaluated for future reference. 1
Physics for (future) medics
Loukotová, Klára ; Kekule, Tomáš (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
This thesis covers several topics from physics which appear in typical medical school curriculum or which are required in order to study this type of schools. It is intended mainly for (future) medical school students. This target group often includes students who did not study physics in depth at secondary school. The reader is therefore not expected to have a great initial knowledge of physics. The emphasis is placed on explaining basic terms and text is supplemented by many illustrative images. From the high school physics perspective this thesis mainly covers mechanical waves, electric field and fluid mechanics. 1
Development of experimental sets for a new conception of Optics in the Interactive Physics Laboratory II
Ceháková, Lydia ; Snětinová, Marie (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
In this thesis, a new experimental set for the Interactive Physical Laboratory (IPL), operated by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, was designed. This experimental set consists of five units named: Measurement of Refractive Index, Malus's Law, Diffraction of Light on Grating, Polarization of Light, Young's Experiment. Most of the units consist of quantitative physics experiments in wave and geometrical optics, inspired by experiments appearing in Czech resources. For each unit, corresponding worksheets were prepared and tested. The worksheets are supposed to guide the students as they go through the experiments and related tasks. Each unit is described in the thesis including typical mistakes students tend to make and methodology for lecturers of the laboratory. The author's solution is included in attachments. A part of the thesis is also dedicated to the introduction of the necessary physics theory that could be used as a study material for visitors of the laboratory.
Simple experiments under the microscope
Malý, Jakub ; Drozd, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Mandíková, Dana (referee)
The aim of this work is to focus on a few high school physics experiments, which are explain in several wals or incorrectly or contain a part that is somehow overlooked. Appropriate adjustment of the experiments I wanted to refute the false explanation, deside which is correct or complete lack of explanation. At the end, I chose four experiments. All of them can be found in any high school textbook or collection of tasks and their explanation are either incomplete or not clear. They are: Conducting electrical current in the glass, where I investigated why heated glass conduct current. Archimedes's law in gases, where I tried to find out, why the bubbles floating in CO2, are after while falling to the bottom. Electrostatic motor, where I tried to find out, what causes the rotation of the motor, which is represented by PET bottle. And a free fall of a tennis ball, where I was finding out, how much is a time of fall influenced by air resistance and what is the minimal height, from which have to be balls thrown, for detecting different moment of impact by the human eye.
Using dataloggers in physics teaching (focused on Vernier experimental system)
Kácovský, Petr ; Böhm, Pavel (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
Title: Using dataloggers in physics teaching (focused on Vernier experimental system) Author: Petr Kácovský Department: Department of Physics Education Supervisor: Mgr. Pavel Böhm Supervisor's e-mail address: pavel.bohm@mff.cuni.cz Abstract: Modernizing equipment enables schools to involve advanced computer- aided systems in physics teaching. This work especially focuses on systems capable of recording and storing measured data for later evaluation - the dataloggers. The introduction of this work is devoted to a survey among physics teachers that should investigate what form of instructions they prefer; then a brief search of existing ma- terials follows. The main part of the work consists of newly created instructions for experiments with dataloggers of the Vernier experimental system, primarily designed to serve tea- chers to implement physics experiments in their teaching. The instructions always include a description how to prepare and undertake the measurement, how to process the measured data and what questions and tasks for students can be connected with this part of physics. Experiments described in this work mainly focus on secondary school thermodynamics (or more precisely on molecular physics and thermals) and their thematic intersection is energy, its forms, transmission and conservation.
Supported Physics Materials for the Science Center iQpark
Kučera, Jiří ; Drozd, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Houfková, Jitka (referee)
Interactive science centrum iQpark in Liberec have become the most significant devices of this kind in Czech Republic. This science centrum contains hundreds of physically and generally focused exhibits, which acquaints visitors with basic physical phenomenon and lows. Exhibits contain basic physical description, bud there are missing advanced descriptions. There are some exhibits, which have experienced by mistake. This thesis contain more detailed physical description of some mechanics exhibits. It is: The pirouette, Newton's cradle, Newton's cart, Hopping balls, Scale (duo-reversible lever). This thesis also contain explanation of related terms and laws.
Interactive Centres in Physics Teaching - Concrete Application
Razímová, Alice ; Drozd, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kekule, Martina (referee)
The main goal of this bachelor thesis was to create a structured description of experiments installed in the iQpark science centre in Liberec. The target was to choose experiments usable especially on high schools. I described 84 interactive experiments which were categorized in six main topics and 23 subtopics. The description of each experiment is completed by photographs, proposals for discussion with students and an original description for students by iQpark. Short videos were made for selected experiments, too. A new website was made for this survey of experiments. The website is available for free. The database is primarily dedicated to high school physics teachers who plane a trip with students to the iQpark science centre. Reader becomes also familiar with the concept of the science centres and their progress in the Czech Republic.
