Chapter 2 adds more features by using the comparison of literary translation and postcolonial writing, revealing that they share certain principles and methods. The theoretical part first defines the terminology related to Francophone Canadian literature and presents the development of this literature and its main themes and movements. At the core of the work are Czech translations from French-Canadian and Quebec literature. The periods in which Czech translations were published are identified, and an assessment is made of which authors were introduced to the Czech milieu and how. The thesis also examines the reasons for and circumstances of Czech editions of francophone Canadian works. Francophone autobiographical graphic novels in the Czech Republic: reception and translation from a multimodal perspective
Kaplan, Eliška ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Brunel, Aude (referee)
This thesis examines the reception and translation of francophone autobiographical comics in the Czech Republic. It is based on theoretical knowledge from the fields of theory and history of autobiographical comics, multimodality theory and comics translation. Based on data from library and book databases, and catalogues, it presents an inventory of autobiographical comics published on the Czech book market between 1990 and 2022. This inventory is supplemented by data from semi-structured interviews with Czech publishers, from online reader databases, public libraries, and media; the analysis of these sources is the starting point for a detailed description of the situation and position of francophone autobiographical comics on the Czech market. According to the data collected, francophone autobiographical comics account for approximately 20 % of the autobiographical comics offer in the Czech Republic, and Czech-published francophone autobiographical comics do not accurately reflect the diversity of this type of work abroad. The thesis, therefore, presents five francophone autobiographical comics and excerpts from their translations which are based on Sara Dicerto's (2018) model of multimodal text analysis, which is presented in the thesis as a comprehensive and useful model for translation...
