Žáčková, Helena ; Běhalová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Šípek, Richard (referee)
This thesis examines the form of publishing in the field of Czech literature for children and young adults in the first half of the 19th century prevailed over the territory of the current Czech Republic. There are only a few studies on this topic so far. Therefore, the research focuses on the analysis of the entertainment literature intentionally published for children and youth. The attached bibliography of 289 titles bound in 312 volumes serves as a basis for the analysis. Jungmann's History of the Czech literature and the electronic catalogue of the Czech National Library was used as the primary sources for identification of the particular titles. The systematic analysis of accessible titles scrutinized typography, the structure of the book and its external appearance, provenance marks along with production and distribution. Special attention was paid to titles called "robinsonade". The conducted research indicates that the children's books were specific in some aspects: enforcement of the Antiqua typeface, preface character, and interesting provenance records. The inquiry also reveals that the leading publishers of the children's books were the Archbishop's printing house and its tenants, Bohumil Haas and his sons, Martin Budislav Neuräutter, Alois Josef Landfras, Arnošt Josiáš Fournier, and...
Personal library of František Cardinal of Dietrichstein
Pallová, Marie ; Marek, Jindřich (advisor) ; Šípek, Richard (referee)
This bachelor thesis devoted to the library of the Moravian nobleman and church dignitary Cardinal František of Ditrichštejn. He lived from 1570 to 1536 and during his lifetime he managed to transform the small collector's library of his father Adam of Ditrichstein into a huge representative library of European size. This library included the Cardinal's personal library, of which twenty-three volumes have survived, and which today, like the rest of the Dittrichstein library, are housed in various institutions throughout Europe. In the practical part, these twenty volumes from the cardinal's private book collection are examined and analysed in terms of external and internal provenance marks. Specifically, these are personal titles that the Cardinal did not acquire from purchased or confiscated book sets, but for which he made some bibliophilic effort to acquire them for his library. Finally, the book donation and three defective adaptations , which the cardinal kept despite their shortcomings, are described.
Contemporary Book Culture Studies at the Universities in the USA and in Canada
Matulík, Petr ; Šípek, Richard (advisor) ; Marek, Jindřich (referee)
This diploma thesis explores, analyzes, and evaluates forms of contemporary book history education at American and Canadian universities. Its goal is to map book history teaching at these institutions, something that no previous study has addressed in detail. In the theoretical part, the context of book history is presented from a historical point of view based on both Czech and foreign expert literature, with an emphasis on the North American environment and, for comparison, the Czech environment as well. In the practical part, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of individual schools, departments and their programmes where book history can be studied is carried out, based on described context. The main source of information in this case was the publicly available curricula of the institutions, with a supplementary source provided by university representatives, who were contacted when necessary. Based on the analysis, specific trends in contemporary book history education at universities in the United States and Canada are then characterized, summarized and evaluated in the conclusion of the thesis.
The Dissemination of Military Theory in the Early Modern Period: Military Manuals Printed in Central Europe in 1550-1650
Andresová, Klára ; Šípek, Richard (advisor) ; Hojda, Zdeněk (referee) ; Prchal, Vítězslav (referee)
The genre of military handbooks, classified as educational literature, has its roots in antiquity. A significant phase of its evolution came with the advent of the printing press, allowing the propagation of such titles via movable types in increasingly large quantities. Authored by experienced soldiers, these books primarily aimed to educate (prospective) officers on the fundamentals of modern warfare. Simultaneously, these often typographically elaborate volumes - supplemented with numerous educational illustrations - could represent a means for their owners to project self-image. In Central Europe, the proliferation of military handbooks began to surge noticeably after 1550, mainly driven by German printing production. This thesis explores the Central European transformation of this genre from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century, that is, until shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War. The research approach aligns with the cultural history of warfare and the New Military History movement. This school of thought strive to apply methods common in non-military historical research to military issues, and explore military history through underutilized or unexplored sources. The research methodology primarily involves retrospective bibliography, but also other quantitative and qualitative...
Book prices in 16th and 17th centuries based on an analysis of the book catalogue written by Jakub K. Praetorius
Fajkusová, Lucie ; Marek, Jindřich (advisor) ; Šípek, Richard (referee)
This master thesis is focused on the book price in 16th and 17th century Bohemia, a subject which has been mostly neglected so far. It tries to find a connection between previous research from abroad and the specific situation of early-modern Bohemia. It focuses on Jakub Konrád Praetorius of Perlenberg, whose private book collection has become a part of the Swedish war booty and thus only a small part of the collection has survived until today. However, a handwritten catalogue of Praetorius's collection was found and digitised in the National Library of Stockholm. This catalogue contains not only the year of printing, author's name and book format but most importantly the price, though not in all cases. This work analyses this unique catalogue formally and contentually with the book price as the main interest, especially while trying to find a connection between the price and the attributes such as year of printing, place of origin, book format and the binding.

The introductory chapters describe the history of the castle building with the library in the town Veltrusy, and the history of the Chotek family with a focus on the builders of the library. The following chapters include a chronological, thematic, linguistic and provenance analysis of the collection. The problematic is dealt with the method of content and critical analysis. Using the methods, it was found out that the majority of the collection comes from the 18th century, there is mainly fiction in the library, and French books predominate. Jan Rudolf Chotek, the magnifier of the library, is an important figure from the provenance point of view.
