The Integration of ETDs into the University Repository of the TUL
Vencláková, Jitka ; Trykarová, Markéta
The paper maps the entire process of building and commissioning the digital repository of the Technical University of Liberec. It also briefly discusses the preparation phase, and primary options for storing and accessing theses and publications. The whole process of assembling the repository has been seen from a direct participant’s point of view. This contribution is a summary of practical experience and examples of good practice, and moreover, points out the demonstration of failed processes. In addition, the contribution includes a description of the current state of active repository processes and a brief proposal for its further development and improvement

Measuring the value of open access ETDs in the Algerian digital repositories: an evaluative study
Mettai, Khaled ; Boumarafi, Behdja
Over the past years, grey literature in general and ETDs in particular has been growing more and more digitally. Algeria ranked first among Arab countries with 15 digital repositories. Electronic Digital Theses (EDTs) represent a huge percentage of the repositories content. There are 14 repositories in which their content policies collect theses and dissertations as well as other types of documents such as articles, reports, etc. The usage of ETDs by undergraduates has been exponentially increased. The study aims to highlight and evaluate the tools for measuring the usage of ETDs in the digital repositories and their availability, the extent of using ETDs by users and evaluation methodology.

When there’s only one: resource sharing and the predicament of the dissertation request
Eighmy Brown, Melissa ; Smith, Austin ; Thompson, Hilary H.
Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are one of the many resources interspersed throughout the current environment of online content. The past two decades have witnessed a shift from print to electronic theses and dissertations and an accompanying growth in university mandates requiring deposit of ETDs in institutional repositories. While these changes should have paved the way for unfettered online access, barriers such as embargoes requested by the author and vendor licensing restrictions have also emerged, hampering access to these unpublished works. Likewise, policies governing cataloging, deposit, and repository access may differ widely across institutions, adding further complexity to the landscape. Interlibrary Loan practitioners are looking for ways to share this unique content and help users navigate the terrain despite the obstacles. This presentation will explore recent trends in thesis requesting and fulfillment using borrowing and lending requests for theses and dissertations from two U.S. public research universities, along with the perspectives of colleagues at peer institutions. These data sets demonstrate that the demand for these materials extends across borders, raising the question: how can we encourage the sharing of ETDs on a global scale? The authors hope their research on the accessibility of theses and dissertations will inform the international academic community on ways to improve the sharing of these important institutional assets, including raising awareness of the need for a policy and workflow that permits controlled ILL lending of embargoed ETDs that mirrors lending of print dissertations.

Ways of Dissemination, Usage and Impact Tracking of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Kettler, Meinhard
The digital transformation has had a tremendous impact on graduate research workflows and output. Most theses are submitted as ETDs, although the share varies by country and by subject. Universities worldwide are running institutional repositories to showcase new graduate research, as well as recently digitized material. The presentation will highlight studies on dissertation and theses usage on repositories as well as giving insights into ProQuest’s unique dissertations and theses analytics.

Online Subject Searching of Dissertations
Bratková, Eva
This paper evaluates searching for doctoral dissertations by topic in various online systems. The situation in the Czech Republic is introduced, including the problems involved in completing successful topical searches for dissertations – is it possible to find all relevant materials, or is it sufficient just to find something? The Czech situation is then compared with how systems abroad, particularly in the United States, are being implemented with new access routes for dissertations in the form of linked open data, in which controlled vocabularies of subject terms figure prominently. The paper also discusses how selected European systems whose dissertations are already presented in the WorldCat database will cope with a challenge: “... Over time, these references [for topic entities] will be replaced with persistent URIs to... Linked Data resources”?
