Interference of Czech, German, and English with the focus on the quantity of German vowels

This work deals with language interference and the teaching of foreign languages and of their pronunciation. It provides a detailed description and comparison of the vowel systems of Czech, German and English. It then focuses on connecting the graphic and the phonic aspects of these three languages and looks for differences. In the research part, the author investigated how well the pupils of two third years of the Kolín Grammar School do when it comes to the German vowel quantity and its relationship with the graphic form of the language. The research took place in the phases of pretest, intervention, posttest. During the tests, the data was collected in writing - pupils wrote dictated German words and marked long vowels in preprinted words. The research was conducted first in one grade and then in the second to improve the intervention. During the intervention lesson the students were led, among other things, to derive a helpful pronunciation rule, according to which stressed vowels followed by at most one consonant should be pronounced long. In the German tests, numerous English interferences were noted, e.g. in the words Glas or Metall. THE BEGINNINGS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AT CZECH SCHOOLS: PERIOD TEXTBOOKS AND TEACHING METHODS BEFORE 1945

This diploma thesis deals with English textbooks used at Czech higher secondary schools in the era till 1948. The diploma thesis is composed of two parts - the theoretical and the analytical part. The theoretical part consists in a description of the educational environment, including development of the Czech education systeém (in the monarchy) and czechoslovak educational systém, with regard to the development of grammar schools (gymnázium) and bussiness schools (obchodní akademie), which is a specific type of secondary school where the Eenglish language was taught. The practical part concerns the analysis of chosen English textbooks intended for individual high school years. The selection was made with regard to the education reforms, which changed the school system.
English as a Lingua Franca from the perspective of Czech people

This thesis deals with the development and global spread of the English language. The main purpose is to examine the prevailing attitude in Czech society towards English as a language which can be used as a tool of communication with people worldwide. The theoretical part begins with an introduction of the concept English as a lingua franca followed by the historical development of English in the context of historical events which have had fundamental effect on the spread of the language. Furthermore, the author outlines the position of English in the Czech Republic. The practical part uses a quantitative survey to examine whether Czech people are aware of the current position of English in the world and to what extent is the knowledge of the language important to them. The survey also focuses on the level of English in the Czech Republic and the willingness of Czechs to use the language. The results of the survey are compared with theoretical findings.
Mobile Game for Practicing English Vocabulary

Cílem této práce bylo navrhnout a implementovat multiplatformní vzdělávací mobilní hru pro procvičování a rozšiřování anglické slovní zásoby. Hra je založena na pravidlech slovní kopané a jí podobných her se slovy a obsahuje režim online hry dvou hráčů proti sobě. Aplikace využívá platformu .NET, kde je implementována v jazycích C# a XAML. Činnost mobilního klienta závisí na vzdálených službách, které byly nasazeny s využitím vhodných cloudových služeb a integračních možností platformy Microsoft Azure. Verze mobilní aplikace pro Android byla publikována prostřednictvím Google Play v režimu přístupu pro testování a ozkoušena na uzavřené skupině uživatelů s vlastními zařízeními. Na základě zpětné vazby z testování byly navrženy možnosti dodatečných vylepšení v oblastech odstranění technických slabin a přidání nových funkcionalit.

Aplikace využívá platformu .NET, kde je implementována v jazycích C# a XAML. Části řešení dostatečně připravené pro produkční prostředí byly nasazeny s využitím vhodných cloudových služeb Microsoft Azure. Aplikace na Android byla publikována lokálně a ozkoušena na vybrané skupině uživatelů v rámci uzavřeného testování. Výsledky testování posloužily k určení stavu řešení v okamžiku dokončení práce a na na jejich základě byla navržena možná vylepšení nad rámec technických nedostatků a omezení.
Use of Drama in Education methods for teaching English

The theoretical part of this thesis is focused on the introduction to drama as a separate object with its principles and the principles of working with drama, on its methods and techniques. We will introduce here the work of teachers of drama education and training opportunities in this field. In terms of psychology, the work deals with the development of speech in children and the ability to learn a new language, so that we get the most lasting effect in the preservation of the skills acquired in the memory. An integral part of this work is also didactic teaching of foreign languages and its characteristics. Required skills in a foreign language, then set the General Educational Programme for Basic Education, which allows us to set learning goals. The theoretical part is also a methodology to creating tutorials foreign language with the use of drama in education and its reflection. The practical part contains taught lessons on selected topics of the English language, where I used drama as a teaching resource.

The issue of pupils with SLD and didactics of English language are described in the theoretical part. The aim of the practical part was to find out how pupils with SLD are taught English in primary schools, which forms of education, the most frequently aids (textbooks, materials, etc.) and methods are used. Quantitative as well as qualitative methods were chosen for the research - the questionnaire survey (the questionnaire for teachers), aids and analysis of materials, interviews with teachers and case studies. On the basis of the obtained data, the effectiveness of the various activities is evaluated and a list of the recommended teaching aids, materials and resources is presented. Image of British Culture in ESOL Textbooks

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the image of British culture in selected ESOL textbooks by evaluating the amount of content associated with it. The objectives are to discover the extent into which the culture is implemented in the selected sample - New English File series - as well as the series' focus on either elite Culture involving the great products of civilisation or culture in terms of behaviours, beliefs, and life patterns, and what the balance of its forms of representation is. Two major intertwined parts are covered within this paper: a specialist literature review and a content analysis, where the latter builds upon the theoretical background established in the former.
