Virtual National Phonoteque as the sector agregator of the sound cultural heritage

Situation and intentions in the area of care of sound documents in memory institutions of the Czech Republic
Horová, Iva ; Šír, Filip
The paper highlights the plight of the Czech Republic in the area of care for sound cultural heritage. Although this topic has recently appeared in the official state documents, there have been no changes in practice. Some steps were taken by the Moravian Land Library, but we still lack systematic support and, above all, the creation of a methodological center. We are increasingly wasting our time, physically degrading our bearers and threatening to permanently lose their content. The presented model explores the whole range of problems to be addressed and the actors that need to be involved.

The Virtual National Phonoteque as a eCulture Sound agregator
Horová, Iva ; Šír, Filip ; Žabička, Petr
The VNF Portal is a new electronic resource with unique content. Gather information about sound heritage - about the existence, location and form of sound documents in the Czech Republic. MZK on its implementation cooperates with individual institutions that keep this type of documents in their funds and take over VNF their metadata records. But it is not just about aggregating metadata records, but also about joining links to already digitized documents in the institutions involved. Thus, VNF serves as a comprehensive tool for professionals and the general public. He has the ambition to become an audio recorder aggregator can also serve to coordinate the acquisition activities of the involved institutions or to serve for shared cataloging.

the Sound Document Landscape in the Czech Republic
Horová, Iva ; Šír, Filip
This paper focuses on an area of audio preservation at the national level that has until recently been completely neglected. Our biggest challenge lies in the fact that we still do not have a Czech National Sound Archive, primarily because we lack systematic preservation policies for audio at a national level. Over the last two years much has been accomplished, but the direction has not been firmly established, and it does not yet have strong institutional support. While our goals have recently been captured in the State Cultural Policy, 2015-2020, the question of funding has not been resolved. In this presentation, we will discuss some of our recent, important activities. Our platform, which aims to fill a gap in understanding the national sound cultural heritage, is called the Virtual National Phonotheque (www.narodnifonoteka.cz). It informs users about the existence, location and content of all audio documents published or housed in the Czech Republic. It is very important that we also cover the history of the Czech sound industry, record labels and publishing. In addition, we are moving forward in many other directions related to the preservation of audio recordings. We want to highlight the gains we have made in our work so far, all without big projects or money from the Czech Republic.

Houston, we have a problem: how to teach young generation to preserve sound cultural heritage
Horová, Iva ; Novotná, Helena ; Šír, Filip
Media preservation and archiving needs unique skillsets. We live in a time of technology that enables us to utilize it in favor of the world sound cultural heritage, especially in terms of its protection for the next generations. We would like to ask and discuss some crucial questions related to our power, to the IASA aims, objectives and possibilities in the matter of design, promotion and dissemination of training in this area. But it's not just about special education and training in the usual concept. It must go on activities in the broadest sense and widest conception. Great emphasis must be placed on the motivation of getting support from the Decisions makers. We should start with a basic broad awareness. We need advocacy strategies and changing leadership skills. It is necessary to seek new ways of cooperation and ways of thinking. We need reshaping of our own minds, our abilities and skills. Without the young generation we are lost – we need to involve it, to wake up their interest, pass on to them our knowledge and know-how. On several cases from our practice in the CR we will show how successful we were and where we were not.

Virtual National Phonoteque - increasing cooperation
Malinová, Iva ; Horová, Iva
Last year, the National Library of Technology of the Czech Republic became the new administrator of the Virtual National Phonoteque (VNP). This unique database is the aggregator of audio documents stored in Czech institutions. The portal collects metadata across different types of institutions: libraries, archives, museums, commercial publishers, Czech Radio, Czech Television and even private collectors, making them all accessible in one location. Visitors to the portal can use it to locate metadata records for the item of interest, thereafter finding themselves with several options: to visit the owner of the audio to listen to it there or borrow it, to buy it in the publisher’s e-shop, or to view and listen digitised version directly. The portal currently contains about one and a half million metadata records and pools data from 24 suppliers. Thanks to our established collaborations we are now undertaking more projects and working towards taking the next steps. In cooperation with Supraphon we have made a new service for NLT visitors, who have exclusive direct access to the Supraphon Digital Archive, allowing them to listen music via headphones and on mobile devices from within our library. Our immediate targets for next two years are to involve and cooperate with more suppliers to enrich the VNP´s content, and to develop a new version of the portal to meet all the criteria of a modern, secure database. Given our common history, we are open to collaboration with slovak libraries and other institutions, with regards to sound recordings.
