The Turbulent Development of Czechoslovak Middle Eastern Policy in the Years 1948-1955
Taterová, Eva
This chapter aims to introduce and interpret the development of Czechoslovak foreign policy to the Middle East in 1948-1955 in the context of the ongoing Cold War using the case studies of Czechoslovak bilateral relations with Israel and Egypt. After the communist coup in February 1948, Czechoslovak foreign policy encountered essential changes that also influenced Czechoslovak attitudes towards the Middle East. While in the late 1940s there was an effort to maintain the existing local partnerships (e.g. the continuing support to the emerging State of Israel), the early 1950s brought a significant shift of Czechoslovak Middle Eastern policy due to the international and internal political factors. As result, Czechoslovakia started to focus on the development of close mutual relations with some Arab countries. In this sense, the year 1955 is considered a milestone regarding the Egyptian-Czechoslovak arms deal which set an important precedent for\nsimilar contracts of military cooperation between Czechoslovakia with the other regional actors.

Hradecká, Markéta ; Wohlmuth Markupová, Jana (advisor) ; Houda, Přemysl (referee)
A BiographicalStudy of VidaNeuwirthova: The Influence ofFamilyHeritage on herArtistic Life and Work Using biographical methodology within contemporary historic studies, this thesis aims to present interpretations of life events as they were understood by the main subject of this research - Vida Neuwirthova- based on further analyses and interpretations of oral- historical interviews and other sources. Vida Neuwirthova is known to the public as a popular actress in the famous film Tri veterani (1984), and a dramatic shortcut in the understanding of her life events has influenced her current media image. Detailed biographical study reveals that the core of her life story is based on the discovery early in young adulthood of her Jewish heritage from her paternal family line. This important change in the understanding of her identity influenced the way she activated her artistic performance during the so-called "late normalisation"of the 1980s, founding the children's theater Feigele within the local Prague Jewish community. This period of time was characterized by an authoritarian state regime with a declared antisemitic ideology which tried to suppress and/or assimilate any signs of Jewish identity. In my thesis, I explore a possible change of meaning that Vida Neuwirthova provides in a retrospective...

Zatřepálková, Hana ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Doležalová, Antonie (referee)
The thesis focuses on German-speaking economists, specifically Oskar Engländer, Alfred Amonn, and Hugo Müller, who taught economically oriented subjects at the German University in Prague during the interwar period. Through a combination of historical research and textual analysis of their works, the thesis explores the extent to which these economists expressed interest in the monetary policy of Czechoslovakia and its notable figures, Alois Rašín and Karel Engliš. Additionally, it investigates the predominant themes in their works during this period and provides insights into the potential applications of computer-based textual analysis in the field of the history of economic thought.
Czechoslovak Diplomacy and Israel in 1948-1967
Krausová, Noemi ; Putík, Daniel (advisor) ; Kocian, Jiří (referee)
Noemi Krausová Bachelor thesis Czechoslovak Diplomacy and Israel in 1948 - 1967 2015 Abstract This bachelor thesis focuses on the development of Czechoslovak-Israeli diplomatic relations from 1948 until 1967. Czechoslovakia supported the Jewish community in Palestine in the first years after the Second World War and was promoting the idea of a Jewish state. The friendly attitude on the part of Czechoslovakia was not altered after the communist coup in 1948. Czechoslovakia became the only state to support Israel, by supplying arms, during the War of Independence of 1948/49. Since 1950, however, the Czechoslovak attitude towards Israel began to change under the Soviet influence which was clearly dominant in the internal as well as external policies of the communist regime in Prague. The relations with Israel gradually deteriorated after 1950 as Zionism was declared as an enemy by the communist power. The anti-Zionism of the regime became most pronounced during the political trial against the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Rudolf Slánský, as well as against other - mostly Jewish - party officials in 1952. The Israeli side was surprised by this fast turn in the Czechoslovak approach. This new policy of hostility culminated in 1967 when the diplomatic relations were suspended...

Hána, Petr ; Jirásková, Věra (referee) ; Havlůjová, Hana (referee)
1950s may be classified as one of the worst periods in Czechoslovakia's history. The totalitarian communist regime in the period between 1948 and 1953 is called the Stalinism. The primary objective hereof was to evaluate teaching about the Stalinism period in Czechoslovakia in secondary schools, in particular, to assess the scope of correctness and completeness of the related curriculum and teaching methods. The secondary objective hereof was to introduce and describe the Stalinism as a typical example of totalitarianism and to define crucial elements of this non-democratic form of government using the example of Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1953. The thesis proceeds from the theoretical part via a case study to the practical part. The first part classifies totalitarianism, defines its historical outset and determines its main features. The second chapter describes and explains the Stalinism, which is a typical example of totalitarianism having functioned in practice in the Soviet Union from where it spread to the majority of the Communist countries, including Czechoslovakia. The third chapter explains the practical application of the Stalinism elements and methods used to control a society according to the Soviet model using the example of Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1953. The practical part hereof focuses...

Sabina Růžičková Abstract The diploma work "Media portrayal of Warsaw pact invasion to Czechoslovakia in selected Italian newspapers" brings closer look at this historical phenomena from the view of several Italian newspapers.
