The sources of happiness of seniors living in a retirement home
Kovalová, Diana ; Valentová, Hana (advisor) ; Presslerová, Pavla (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the happiness of seniors living in a nursing home. It focuses primarily on what are the core and main sources of happiness that people in a nursing home draw upon. As the population grows older, issues of care and happiness in the elderly are becoming more and more pressing and important, when it is a topic that will one day have an effect on everyone. It is therefore important to explore this area in more detail and to find out the main areas of people's lives where they really feel happy and help them to cope with the difficult moments that old age and the decline of strength bring with it (poorer health, diminishing social ties, depression, fear of death, etc.). Last but not least, there is an effort to show how much the environment in which the elderly live has an impact on them and how important it is to improve the quality and care of retirement homes to maximise the satisfaction of the people who live there. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part introduces the topic of old age and ageing. How the period of old age is periodized, what are the manifestations of ageing and how the individual adapts to this period. Then there is the topic of happiness, its characteristics, concept and what are its sources. Last but not least, there are...
Aristotelian Well-Being as a Contemporary Problem
Čechová, Alexandra ; Marek, Jakub (advisor) ; Zika, Richard (referee)
In this diploma thesis I am addressing the concept of well-being in recent philosophy as a phenomenon of our time. I also try to specify the role of philosophy in its research. At the same time, I am aiming to give reasons why this concept has recently become more and more a part of discussions in society. In the text, I link the contemporary conception of well-being with Aristotle's notion of a good life or the concept of eudaimonia. In two chapters I also discuss the ideas of A. MacIntyre and M. Nussbaum, who have commented on and responded to Aristotle's and the contemporary notion of the good life. Then, with the help of the two projects at Yale and Harvard that I mention in the thesis, I attempt to outline how the research on well-being is now being conducted and what the results to date have been. Finally, the thesis thus mentions specific activities and behaviors that have been empirically shown to have an impact on a person's overall well-being, and in which some correspondence with Aristotle's philosophy can be observed.
Factors influencing life satisfaction, the GDP indicator in relation to happiness and life satisfaction
Nováčková, Veronika ; Vejchodská, Eliška (advisor) ; Frič, Pavol (referee)
The main topic of the master thesis is the relationship between life satisfaction and the GDP indicator. Factors that influence life satisfaction are the subject of my research. The master thesis is based on two scientific studies that deal with the relationship between life satisfaction and the GDP indicator. The conclusions of these two studies contradict each other. The first study was published in 1974 by Richard Easterlin. According to Easterlin's paradox, the people's happiness in a given country does not increase with increasing GDP in the long run. When people reach a certain level of wealth and material well-being, their subjective happiness and overall life satisfaction do not grow anymore. The second scientific study was published in 2008 by Stevenson and Wolfers. The authors concluded that there is a positive correlation between life satisfaction and increasing GDP per capita in many countries. This master's thesis aimed to find out what could be the reason behind this contradiction. Moreover, the master's thesis aimed to identify factors influencing life satisfaction. In the empirical part of the work, I used qualitative research methods. Based on the methodologies used in the two studies, I created two types of questionnaires. In total, I conducted fifty semi- structured interviews....
Perception of the meaning of life by middle-aged people, "middle-aged crisis"
PŘIBYLOVÁ, Dana
The thesis is focused on the issue of the perception of the meaning of life in the middle-aged generation, which tends to be characterised by a 'mid-life crisis'. The term is often associated with negative phenomena such as physical ageing, career stagnation, marriage boredom and the general stereotype of life. Here, the importance of logotherapy, which helps us to find meaning in life, helps us to communicate in social work, e.g. existential loneliness and loss of purpose in life, is precisely important. The work is drawn up interdisciplinarily on the basis of professional literature, mapping the concept of middle age from the point of view of various authors, the field of change, decision-making and the meaning of the so-called transition period, when one finds oneself between something that one was and something that one will be. From a philosophical and psychological point of view, the work is focused on the search for the meaning of life. Attention is also given to basic concepts and theoretical approaches relating to the meaning of life, with the aspect placed on human goals, life values, motivation, the value of health, the value of love, happiness, life as a calling. The aim of the thesis is to map how the period and meaning of life for the middle-aged generation (described as the "midlife crisis") is perceived from the perspective of the disciplines of science. Indicate options of solutions and promote personal satisfaction in the midlife crisis, hint at options to prevent the negative consequences associated with entering the second half of life. To show that, even at this stage in life, one can perceive and embrace the meaning of life in a positive way and live a happy and full life.

Interventions increasing happiness and life satisfaction
Kukulová, Petra ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Komárek, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with the intervention strategies of positive psychology and how they affect our happiness and life satisfaction. The literary overview of the work defines the concept of happiness and mention the factors contributing towards its level. There are also evidence appropriate to question whether it is even possible to achieve long lasting positive change in the level of happiness. Another part deals already on intervention strategies. I've focused on mapping the working mechanism of these interventions. I mention factors that contribute to their effectiveness. At the end of the theoretical work I mention the critical reflection on researches to verify the effectiveness of intervention strategies and introduce most common pitfalls, typical for this type of studies. Draft of my research project is aimed at verifying the effectiveness of intervention strategy, "Three Good Things."

The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.
