Security a la AMLO: An Evaluation of the Militarisation of Mexican Law Enforcement
Walker, Ellena ; Březinová, Kateřina (vedoucí práce) ; Conway, Maura (oponent)
This thesis aims to provide an assessment of the militarisation of the Mexican Guardia Nacional (GN) under Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), as well as consider its societal implications in terms of citizen security, human rights, police reform, and the legal order. This research finds its value in its preliminary and exploratory nature, resting on a relatively understudied subject. The study provides one of the first attempts at measuring the status of the GN, which has evolved into the principal national guarantor of public security in Mexico. The evaluation of the GN was carried out through the establishment a scale of measurement based on commonalities with the Fuerzas Armadas (FA), which was applied to four separate indicators: material, cultural, organisational, and operational. All four indicators were found to share a high number of commonalities with the FA. As such, this thesis deems that the GN is undergoing a process of militarisation, and can be currently considered as similar to a 'constabularised military'. The implications of this assessment can be seen in terms of citizen security, human rights, police reform, and the legal order. It was found that while the GN had no impact on levels of violence or be seen to be moving away from a defined legal order, the body was...
Far-right parties youth social media targeting: An analysis of Vox's Instagram and TikTok Activity
Fernández Arriola, Teresa ; Conway, Maura (vedoucí práce) ; Gherghina, Sergiu (oponent)
The purpose of this research is to analyse the youth-targeted content published on social media platforms by Spanish far right party Vox, comparing their posts on Instagram and TikTok. Although both platforms are widely common among the youth, the average age of TikTok users is significantly lower; thus, the content uploaded by political parties on the platform is most likely targeted towards said demographic. The research will be achieved by conducting a visual content analysis of a number of publications uploaded on both platforms between 2020 and 2022. The investigation will observe the engagement received (likes, comments, views and saved content) as well as other variables such as the visual theme, tone, or elements directed towards the youth, among others. It was expected that these variables would portray the type of content with which Vox targets the Spanish youth. The research found that the type of publications the far right party uploads contain a humorous, angry or celebratory tone, memes and are adapted towards the discourse utilised by the youth online.
From Hashtag to Policy Agenda: Exploring the Role of German Twitter in the 2022 Iranian Revolutionary Movement
Theisen, Esther Jamileh ; Conway, Maura (vedoucí práce) ; Střítecký, Vít (oponent)
This master's thesis examines how the Iranian Revolutionary Movement 2022 utilised German Twitter to influence Germany's foreign policy agenda toward Iran. Discursive strategies in the context of social movement studies, besides frame theory, remain understudied. This is particularly true for movements resisting or challenging mainstream, hegemonic discourses. By exploring how the movement utilises German Twitter for the formulation of counter- narratives and strategies of resistance we can gain insight into the hegemonic discourse in German public and political discourses and how the movement addresses them. By using Lazar's (2005) Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA) as the theoretical and methodological backbone it was able to identify two counter-narratives and two strategies of resistance and analysed the political impact of them.

Framing of Indonesian Radicalisation Pathways in the Australian news media: A Comparison of Broadsheets and Tabloids
Jung, Hansol ; Conway, Maura (vedoucí práce) ; Prina, Federica (oponent) ; Špelda, Petr (oponent)
This study examines how radicalisation in Indonesia is treated in the Australian press. Radicalisation is widely defined as a dramatic shift in the belief system of an individual or a group, denial of democratic means, and justifying the use of violence to achieve the political aims in this paper. Although there are various types and drivers of radicalisation, the researcher limited this research to identifying the framing of six pathways of Islamic radicalisation in Indonesia identified by Hwang and Schulze and Idris. For this purpose, 301 articles from selected Australian broadsheets and tabloids, dating up to 8 May 2020, were collected. Using quantitative and qualitative content analysis to generate the frequency of terms and metaphors used to describe radicalisation pathways in Indonesia, the study finds that the securitising and stigmatising frames are mainly employed in the Australian press in portrayal of radicalisation in Indonesia. In addition, the study explores the different style of coverage employed in Australian broadsheets and tabloids. Before conducting the comparative study, the researcher surmised that broadsheets will cover radicalisation in Indonesia with neutral tone while tabloids will sensationalise the issue. However, the outcome revealed that the framing employed by...
Comparing Far Right and Jihadi Use of Crowdfunding, Cryptocurrencies, and Blockchain Technology: Accessibility, Geography, Ideology

Comparing Far Right and Jihadi Use of Crowdfunding, Cryptocurrencies, and Blockchain Technology: Accessibility, Geography, Ideology July, 2020 University of Glasgow: 2369640 Dublin City University: 18114814 Charles University: 16813690 Shahed Warreth Presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies Word Count: 22,343 words Supervisor: Prof. Maura Conway Date of Submission: 27 July 2020 Abstract Previous academic research and policy work has focused predominantly on terrorist, i.e. jihadi, financing, while far right financing has predominately received the attention of journalists and media outlets. To date, no work has been done that compares and contrasts how the far right and jihadi groups utilise crowdfunding, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain technology. This dissertation seeks to shed light on how both ideologies use them, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this use to each. It finds that far right groups are far more successful than jihadi groups in their use of these methods and technologies. This is due to three factors: the accessibility and proliferation of online crowdfunding platforms, and integration of cryptocurrencies and blockchain; the impact of geographical location and legislative...
Canadian press coverage of terrorism: The virgin terrorist vs. the Canadian jihadist?
Saxena, Kajal ; Conway, Maura (vedoucí práce) ; Aslan, Emil (oponent)
The violent and deadly rise of Incel attacks has disrupted Canada's domestic terrorism landscape by putting a spotlight on non-Jihadist extremism. In 2019, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service released a report which revealed an evolved overview of Canada's domestic terrorism landscape that redefined extremism to include: Ideologically-motivated violent extremism (IMVE). With the occurrence of four deadly Incel terrorist attacks between 2018 and 2020, Canada has experienced more Incel terrorism related deaths than those committed by their Jihadist counterparts. By examining the nexus between news media framings and terrorism, this research study seeks to contribute to the gap in terrorism studies on Incels and analyses the way in which the Canadian news media frames their attacks within the label of terrorism. Referencing Azeezah Kanji's 2018 study of news media framings of Muslim violence as a theoretical and thematic framework, this study employs a qualitative research design to answer the research question: In what ways does news media coverage of Incel attacks compare to the coverage of domestic Jihadist attacks? This study employs a combination of content and thematic analysis to a corpus of news media articles on four recent Incel attacks and compares its findings to Kanji's 2018 study....
Comparative local and global discursive strategies of the Suidlanders: How right-wing extremist factions use discursive strategies to construct identities
de Satge, Francis David Yves Czerniewicz ; Conway, Maura (vedoucí práce) ; Střítecký, Vít (oponent)
Francis de Satgé Charles University 50698138 Abstract Right-wing extremism, nationalism and populism are increasingly prominent in the global political landscape (Toscano, 2019: 1). This dissertation argues that these phenomena are partial products of discursively constructed identities conveyed to audiences using a variety of strategies. It critically examines how the South African Christian survivalist right-wing extremist organization, the Suidlanders, uses political communication to discursively construct identities. Using the discourse-historical approach (Wodak, 2015; Reisigl & Wodak, 2017) to analyse the 2018 and 2019 YouTube videos of the Suidlanders' spokesperson, Simon Roche, the argument is made that his discursive constructions of difference and sameness are the product of the complex socio-political history of the Afrikaner nation in South Africa as well as of contemporary transnational constructions of far-right identity. In Roche's construction of in-groups and out- groups, he conceives the Afrikaner in-group as deeply fractured by political difference, and the black South African Other as one component of a larger, transnational Other - the globalists. Departing from the history of nationalist identity in South Africa, the Suidlanders find "belonging" in a loosely defined transnational...
Pictorial Possible Worlds
