English as a Lingua Franca in Multinational Corporations: A Case Study of Everyday Communication

This bachelor’s thesis explains a phenomenon of English language as a lingua franca and its use in everyday communication in multinational corporations. The thesis consists of theoretical and practical parts. The first part describes the status of English as a global language and its use worldwide. It also explains the current position of English in the world based on the Kachru model of spread of English. The second part is devoted to practical use of English as a lingua franca in multinational corporations and considers three of the most popular genres of business communication. All analyzed materials are taken from internal communication within one multinational corporation.

Mobile Game for Practicing English Vocabulary

The goal of this thesis was to design and implement a multi-platform educational mobile game for practicing and expanding English vocabulary. The game is based on the rules of word chain and similar word games and implemented as an online player versus player mode. The application is implemented in C# and XAML, making use of the .NET platform. The mobile client depends on remote services for its operation. These services were deployed using appropriate cloud services and integration options of the Microsoft Azure platform. An Android version of the application was published on Google Play in limited access for testing and tried on a closed group of users and their devices. Based on user feedback collected from this testing, further improvements were suggested in the areas of removing technical shortcomings and additional functionalities.

Commented Translation: Measurements in Electrotechnics and Audiotechnics

The concern of this thesis is a commented translation of an instructional text used in university courses Measurement in Electrical Engineering and Measurement in Audio Engineering. The translation was created for the use of future foreign students attending said courses. The commentary puts forth the reasoning behind the motivation to carry out the translation, views and theories applied during the translation process, encountered issues and their individual solutions, including specific examples, as well as a brief linguistic study of the text. In addition to the translation, this thesis describes the concept of glossaries that would accompany each set of instructions in the text. The final product of the translation is ready to be assessed to be an official study material.

Internetový robot plnící funkci kalendáře

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vytvořením internetového robota, který funguje jako správce kalendáře událostí. Robot s uživatelem komunikuje pomocí podmnožiny přirozeného anglického jazyka. Uživatel se nemusí učit speciální syntaxi příkazů a používání robota-kalendáře je mu tak maximálně usnadněno, což je hlavním přínosem této práce. Tento způsob ovládání by měl pomoci zejména počítačově méně zdatným uživatelům, pro které by ovládání speciálními příkazy mohlo být překážkou. Pro komunikaci, která se odehrává formou instant messagingu, je využit protokol XMPP. Ke strojovému zpracování přirozeného jazyka bylo využito nástroje NLTK. Program robota byl kompletně vytvořen v programovacím jazyce Python. Práce se také zabývá dalšími možnostmi rozšiřování funkcionality robota.

Pro lidi srozumitelný jazyk temporální logiky

Tato práce se zabývá automatickým překladem z přirozeného jazyka do temporální logiky. Existující výzkum na toto téma je shrnut a práce je na něm založena. Pro specifikaci temporálních vlastností, je vytvořen kontrolovaný jazyk, podmnožina anglického jazyka. Hlavním přínosem práce jsou algoritmy pro překlad mezi přirozeným jazykem a temporální logikou, založený na zpracovávání a prohledávání vzorů v gramatických závislostech Standfordského parseru angličtiny. Další směr vývoje je diskutován na konci.

The application is implemented in C# and XAML, making use of the .NET platform. Parts of the solution, which were ready for production environment, were deployed making use of suitable Microsoft Azure Cloud services . An Android version of the application was published locally and tried on a selected group of users in closed testing. Results of the testing have determined the state of the solution upon completing the thesis and have been used as basis for proposing further improvements above current technical shortcomings and limitations.

Interference češtiny, němčiny a angličtiny se zaměřením na kvantitu německých vokálů

Tato práce se zabývá interferencí a výukou cizích jazyků a jejich výslovnosti. Poskytuje podrobný popis a srovnání vokalických systémů češtiny, němčiny a angličtiny. Zaměřuje se pak obzvlášť na propojení grafické a zvukové stránky těchto tří jazyků a hledá odlišnosti. Ve výzkumné části byla zkoumáno, jak žáci dvou třetích ročníků Gymnázia Kolín ovládají německou vokalickou kvantitu a její vztah s grafickou podobou jazyka. Výzkum probíhal ve fázích pretest, intervence, posttest. Při testech byla data sbírána písemně - žáci psali diktovaná německá slova a vyznačovali dlouhé vokály v předtištěných slovech. Výzkum proběhl nejprve v jednom ročníku a pak ve druhém pro zdokonalení intervence. Žáci byli v jejím průběhu mj. vedeni k odvození pomocného výslovnostního pravidla, dle kterého mají přízvučné vokály následované nejvýše jednou souhláskou vyslovit dlouze. V německých testech byly zaznamenány četné interference angličtiny, např. ve slovech Glas či Metall. Pro pomoc s odhalením anglické interference žáci též psali malý test na anglickou vokalickou kvantitu, který kromě interferencí také odhalil, že téměř všichni žáci nesprávně vyslovovali anglické slovo foot.
