Stubborn Marys: Life Stories of Women of the "Science Enchanted Generation"

Dissertation abstract Stubborn Marie: life stories of the women of the "generation enchanted by science" Jana Římanová, 2023 The dissertation examines the life stories of important Czech scientists who completed their university studies mostly in the 1960s. The main part of the research is the analysis of ten biographical interviews conducted in accordance with the methodology of oral history. The central goal of the research was to answer the question of which key moments and preconditions led these women to successfully establish themselves in the male-dominated academic environment. The research examines the circumstances of origin, life strategies and turning points that influenced the careers of these important personalities of Czech science. The interviews provide an intimate insight into the lives of these women and thus take into account the personal lines of their stories, which have undoubtedly had a significant impact on their careers, but are often omitted in usually publicly published scientific biographies. Behind the front line, Rehabilitation during Covid-19 pandemic

The thesis is based on 13 oral history interviews the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health care sector (specifically rehabilitation medicine and physical medicine). Narrators are health care professionals who are part of multidisciplinary rehabilitation care in different positions and can therefore reflect the pandemic from different perspectives. In addition to the impact on the professional life, the thesis also describe the subjectively perceived impact on the narrators' personal lives. The interviews were recorded in early 2022, after 2 years of living with the pandemic, when strict restrictions were still in place. The thesis provides testimonies of the lived experience of the pandemic among health workers behind the so-called 'frontline', who have not received as much attention in the media. It also compares the experiences of the narrators in the context of Czech realities and compares them with the results of similar international studies on pandemics among health professionals.

Hustling Phenomenon in Czechoslovakia

This diploma thesis deals with hustling which was a phenomenon of Czechoslovakia in late socialism and it is neglected in Czech and Slovak historiography. The aim of this thesis is to bring a new knowledge, but mainly a new perspective on the environment of the shadow economy and people who were part of it. The research is focused on methods and practices of how this people ran their "secondary business", and I also try to find their place in Czechoslovak society. The main basis for this research, are interviews which were recorded by using a method of oral history. Beside this, the study is supported also by knowledge and information of literature, archive materials, and daily newspaper. The study presents new perspectives on the practice of hustlers, their motivation to start with this illegal activity, as well as various views on the term "vekslák", and how these people perceive this word and his sense in relation to their person. There is also a contribution to the ethics of this research which is specifically related to topic by its very nature.

About Freedom without Freedom: Meetings of Students in the U Bílého koníčka Club.

The diploma thesis "O svobodě v nesvobodě: Setkávání studentů U Bílého koníčka před rokem 1989." deals with the development of events in the student editorial boards of magazines and newspapers that preceded November 17th, 1989 from the perspective of beginning journalists, editors and graphic designers who teamed up in these magazines, who were able to quickly organize themselves, to inform peripherals about the intervention on Národní třída and to set up strike committees thanks to a network of contacts at faculties everywhere in Czechoslovakia. The work reflects the narratives of narrators about censorship, self- censorship, and the courage to write about otherwise forbidden topics. It deals with the role of the Czechoslovak Socialist Youth Union in the possibility of publishing magazines and the role of the students, who comment on their historical role several decades later. In addition to the testimonies of narrators who met at the Student Press and Information Centre in the U Bílého koníčka club, the diploma thesis also uses their diary entries and the periodical press analyses.

The Beginnings of the Hip Hop Subculture in the Czech Republic with the Focus on Rap

The aim of the diploma thesis is to conduct a survey of the hip hop music subculture's origins in the Czech Republic. The paper especially focuses on the rap scene. Even though the surveyed phenomena first appeared in the 1980s, the term "hip hop subculture" has been used only since the 1990s. The thesis presents the early musical works of the rap music artists as well as the organization and the course of the first concerts and other hip hop events. Furthermore, the paper deals with the founding and the operation of the specialized web, the magazine, the recording studio and its own record company. The fundamental source of this paper is represented by the several interviews with the rappers and the DJs but also with the organizers of various events, the founder of the magazine and the festival or with the founder of the recording studio. The paper's secondary sources comprise of the specialized literature, magazines, documentaries, TV programmes and podcasts. Key words Oral history, hip hop, rap, subculture

Domnívám se, že v zásadě je možný trojí přístup ke zkoumání toho, co samo sebe nazvalo "sametovou (něžnou) revolucí". Značný a stále rostoucí počet autorů věnuje pozornost komparativní analýze pádu komunistických režimů ve středovýchodní Evropě roku 1989. Největší předností komparací, které nebývají založené na archivním bádání, je široký záběr mapující celý politický terén někdejší "jiné Evropy". Cena kvalitních studií - většinou politologické provenience - spočívá v neotřelých postřezích, v odhalování zajímavých analogií, totožností i rozdílů. Inspirativní i provokativní teze podněcují diskusi, vybízejí k souhlasné i nesouhlasné reakci. Vnášejí do ní novou terminologii, metodické inovace a interpretační hypotézy, které okysličují bádání založené výhradně na archivních pramenech.1 Zatímco komparativní analýza vychází z horizontální perspektivy, historické bilancování je založeno na perspektivě vertikální. Krouží kolem podstatných otázek souvisejících tak či onak se zlomovými body česko-slovenských dějin: ... 1918 - 1938 - 1939 - 1945 - 1948 - 1968 - 1989 - 1992 ... Meditace o "smyslu českých dějin" mají u nás silnou tradici, v současnosti však nemnoho osobností vládnoucích pronikavou silou vhledu do podstaty minulých dějů. Nejde totiž o nic menšího než osvětlit naši přítomnost v souvislostech běžnému...
