World Digital Libraries for accessing medieval manuscripts

World digital libraries for accessing medieval manuscripts Abstract The aim of the thesis is to describe and compare 10 world digital libraries that make available medieval manuscripts. At the beginning of the work, the trends in accessing medieval manuscripts will be mapped. Attention will also be paid to the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and the possibilities of its use in digital libraries focused on medieval manuscripts. Digital libraries will be examined and compared on the basis of a checklist. Questions will focus on bibliographic records formats for manuscripts and images, the use of IIIF, and whether individual digital libraries also act as aggregators. Historical book collections of the National Library in Prague and their curators in 1918-1938

(English) This bachelor thesis deals with the Historical Collections of the National Library of the Czech Republic in the times of the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). The work deals with the department of manuscripts and early printed books and with its collections that were stored here during this period. It summarizes how the collections formed since the foundation of the Charles University, over the Jesuit library in the Clementinum to the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Another part of the work acquaints with the important personalities that influenced the historical collections of the National Library. Among them are Jaromír Borecký, Jan Emler, Anna Císařová-Kolářová, Flora Kleinschnitzová, Milada Paulová, Pavlína Hamanová and Emma Urbánková. Retrospective bibliography in the Czech Lands in the pre-modern period and in the 19th century

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to describe the development of retrospective bibliography in the Czech lands in pre-modern period and in the 19th century. It summarizes pieces of knowledge about selected bibliographies, mainly about Klíč by Antonín Koniáš and Historie literatury české by Josef Jungmann. It will deal with content and form of bibliography. In this bachelor thesis I will also analyze the attitude to foreing bibliographies.
Digital libraries of Czech county libraries

This diploma thesis deals with digital libraries of Czech regional libraries. Based on the available sources of the literature and the questionnaire survey, digital libraries, which are built by regional libraries, are introduced. At the beginning of the thesis is a terminological overview, together with digitization and digitization workflow itself. Then follows a description of the personal layout in digital libraries as well as various activities and standards of digital libraries. The thesis is supplemented by a description of the individual Czech digital libraries, which are built by regional libraries. The thesis also contains the results of a questionnaire survey among regional libraries and outlines the problem areas of regional digital libraries.
Censor and writer Jan Nepomuk Václav Zimmermann (1788-1836)

This work exposes, evaluates and summarises academic and professional career of Jan Nepomuk Vaclav Zimmermann (1788-1836), who worked as a scriptor and a censor. It reviews his censoring and book-examining skills across all fields of book culture. It investigates and evaluates whether contemporary critical testimonies depict Zimmermann's rather negative character rightfully and accurately or not. Zimmermann devoted his time to examining and censoring Czech books and also Hebrew books. As a scriptor at University library, he was responsible for collecting, archiving and organizing manuscripts into catalogues. These catalogues have been filed in National Library for many years. Palaeographical analysis of the catalogues will bring in new facts concerning Zimmermann's autorship. This thesis also presents a list of Zimmermann's work with its historical critical evaluation and compares it to the recent research. Emma Urbánková and her importance for the Czech bibliology

(English) The bachelor thesis deals with a prominent personality of the Czechoslovakian bibliology, Dr. Emma Urbanková (1902-1992). It focuses not only on her career and work, but also on the Department of Manuscripts in today's National Library of the Czech Republic during her time in this institution. The main part of the thesis is Emma Urbánková's professional curriculum and an overview of her works, including the context of the evaluation of her work within the Czech bibliology. The aim of the work is to present Emma Urbánková's professional life and work. As a method, I will use search in biographical literature, published memoirs, her own published works as well as archival material (material from her estate and annual reports of today's National Library). Nuremberg woodblock printings of Erhard Schön in Olomouc and Skalice (16th -20th century)

The thesis is monitored a movement of woodblock printings of graphic Erhard Schön from Nuremberg to Morava. And then the movement to Prostějov, Olomouc and later to Skalice where they were used until the 19th century. These woodcuts were created during the 1620s and they were taken by the printer Jan Günther in the 1640s. Thesis briefly presented a chapbook, its history of development and splitting. This thesis clarifies a historical connections between printer offices in the above mentioned cities. Special focus on pilgrimage woodblock printings Aesop's fables between the printer offices in Prostějov, Olomouc and Skalice from 16th to 20th century.
The acquisition strategy of foreign-language books in public libraries: A comparative study

Public libraries are facing a great challenge to succeed in serving their increasingly diverse communities. This thesis focuses on the acquisition of foreign-language books in public libraries and attempts to address the question whether libraries have special strategies to select and acquire foreign-language books. Particular attention is paid to fiction, the main genre offered by public libraries. To help answer the thesis question, the author compares the acquisition strategies of the Municipal Library of Prague and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin using structured interviews with the key persons responsible for the acquisition of foreign-language books. As a background, the author provides a literature review of foreign-language materials in public libraries and specifically, the acquisition strategy for those materials (i.e. including case studies, research projects and trends from the Czech Republic, the US, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands). This knowledge foundation is considered in the comparison of the two libraries and their acquisition strategies. Historical collection of rare books in the Liberec Research Library

The bachelor thesis informs in detail about the Historical collection of the Regional research library in Liberec. Close attention is paid to the process of its establishment, development and current state in the context of the history of this institution and the Liberec region. First of all, the structure of the Historical collection is specified according to the type of a document. Then, the number of volumes, their thematic and time definition, physical condition and the date of edition are judged. Special attention is also given to the concrete books demonstrating unique characteristics. With regard to the current state of the collection, the standard of its processing, the conditions of preservation and protection of the collection, the ways and possibilities of access to the volumes, as well as the course of the digitalization of the collection are examined. The bachelor thesis presents the historical picture of the large library collection and its importance and utility in these days. Finally, the paper presents important findings, the author's own evaluation and possible future development of the collection.
