Kuklíková, Kateřina ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
This master thesis deals with the development of the academic relations between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany during the so-called normalization, so from the beginning of the 1970s to the fall of the so-called Iron Curtain. The main focus lies on the inter-university partnership between Charles University in Prague and the University of Hamburg, which was concluded in Prague in 1980 and is successfully carried out till today. It was the first cooperation agreement Charles University made with a West German university during the period of the cold war. The thesis analyses, in which way both universities approached the partnership and how the cooperation could be put into practice. The main objective of the text is to find out which dynamics the partnership in the observed period gained and if the cooperation even managed to overcome the original expectations of the main actors considering the given conditions within the domestic and international politics. The examined cooperation is put into a broader context, not only of the development of the Czechoslovak-West German relations but also of the situation within international politics. The partnership was possible to negotiate thanks to bilateral agreements, which arranged the further development of the...

The Process of Transformation of the National People's Army into the Bundeswehr
Kron, Jan ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
Diploma thesis Liquidation or Integration? - the Process of Transformation of the NationalPeople's Army into the Bundeswehr deals with the process of integration of the two German armies after the demise of the bipolar system. German unification brought two diametrically diverging social and economic systems and two different armies together. Despite the ideological contrast between the National People's Army (NVA) and the Bundeswehr, the integration of the personnel of the NVA into the Bundeswehr and the extension of Bundeswehr's scope of activities on five new federal countries posed no major problems and contributed to the process of normalization of Germany's security policy. The way, intensity and velocity with which the German Democratic Republic merged on political and constitutional level with the Federal Republic of Germany became significant factors, which determined the integration of the NVA into the Bundeswehr. The term "Army of the Unity" ("Armee der Einheif') became the term used generally on Germany's political and medial scene for description of the united German army. The aim of the thesis is to analyze conditions, scope and legal provisions connected with the merger of both German armies and to answer the question whether the term "Army of Unity" is justified.

The Environmental Movement as a Form of Opposition in the German Democratic Republic
Kopecká, Pavlína ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis "The environmental movement as a form of opposition in the German Democratic Republic" deals with the problems of forming the environmental movement in the totalitarian SED state. The research concerns the time from the end of the sixties, when environmentalism gained global attention in connection with the world debate over the crisis of the industrial societies, until the beginning of the nineties, when the GDR was dissolved by the reunification with the Federal Republic of Germany. Because the environmental movement was a component of East German dissent, the first part of the thesis gives an overview of opposition in the forty-year history of the GDR. The next section devotes itself to the state's environmental policy in describing the general conditions for creation of the environmental movement. Then the work focuses on the independent environmental debate and its conversion to practical activities. The description of the actual ecological initiatives, activities and groups helps to explain the structure of the newly developing environmental movement. The last chapter concerns itself with the transformation of the independent environmental movement into a new political force and its role in the period of the peaceful revolution and German reunification of 1989/1990.

An office of Bundesarchiv and a research office of Stuttgart University were established in the Zentrale Stelle to elaborate the documents and materials ofthe archive.
