A semiotic Analysis of the Terms "Refugee" and "Migrant" in the Context of the Current Immigration Crisis

The topic of this diploma thesis is semiotic analysis of terms "refugee" and "migrant" in the context of the current migration crisis. The thesis deals with analyzing these terms as semiotic signs. It deals with the way in which selected media treat these terms. Three Czech media were chosen for the research, with 15 selected articles containing research terms from each of them. The sample includes serious news (Aktualne.cz), tabloid news (Blesk.cz) as well as a blog (Blog iDnes.cz) as a journalistic platform, to which anyone can contribute. The research deals with the influence of the media on the formation of concepts and is framed by the theory of social construction of reality presented by T. Luckmann and P. L. Berger. The thesis deals with analysis on the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels. In the theoretical part, the theory of social construction of reality is outlined first. Then the thesis briefly introduces the circumstances of the migration crisis and the basic differences in the meaning of the analyzed signifiers and finally introduces the analytical concepts, which are Morris classification of semiotics, Saussure's distinction between syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships, as well as interrelationships in which individual words can appear in the text. Influence of 21st Century Technological Inventions on the Deprofessionalization of Journalism

The objective of this thesis is to explain terms professionalization and deprofessionalization and their understanding in the context of journalism and technological advancements of the 21st century. The first section of the thesis shows theoretical ideas connected to the influence of new technology on journalists and includes definitions of basic terms, which are used in the thesis. The theoretical section also includes the basics from the history of journalism, which enable us to understand the context of this issue. The research section offers the analysis of how amateur footage is used by two TV stations, Česká televize and Prima television. By using a quantitative content analysis and a standardized survey, the thesis analyses individual types and sources of amateur footage, which are used in both TV stations. The methodological section is there to help us understand the realization of the research. The section includes a part where research questions are asked and the hypothesis is formulated. The conclusion then answers these questions and summarizes the knowledge gained from the research.
The relation between Media Depiction and Historical Truth on the example of Historical Motion Picture and Television Series

Diploma thesis The relation between Media Depiction and Historical Truth on the example of Historical Motion Picture and Television Series deals with the relationship between official historiography and contemporary historical film or TV series. The work is based on a theoretical framework, which postulates Robert A. Rosenstone in several publications, especially in the book History on Film/Film on History. The American historian and film theorist is one of the most prominent supporters of the view that historical film must be seriously perceived not only as a historical artifact but also as a medium conveying the depiction of the past. Qualitative analysis was performed in the work of movies Masaryk, Lidice and the miniseries Hořící keř. In the first part of the work, they were compared with an institutionally recognized version of the past - specifically with secondary school textbooks with the approval clause of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic. In the following part, the film inventions were examined according to the theory of Rosenstone and finally according to the theory of fictional worlds according to the linguist Lubomír Doležel.
