Innovative device for the simulation of environmental conditions and testing of building materials
Cacciotti, Riccardo ; Wolf, Benjamin ; Macháček, Michael ; Frankl, Jiří
Excessive humidity influences the performance of building envelopes and the safety of their occupants. Moisture related problems can indeed impose significant health risks for buildings’ users and even lead, under extreme scenarios, to structural failures. This paper investigates an innovative experimental setup for evaluating the influence of changing environmental conditions on the performance of building materials. It stems out from a broader ongoing research aimed at studying the trends of mould growth on wooden building components. The presented results include the design, construction and numerical validation of a small-scale climatic wind tunnel (2m x 1.8m ca.) to be used for the simulation of natural ventilation and daily humidity and temperature fluctuations. Key findings include the final design of a low cost, modular construction which allows gathering reliable data on the response of building materials exposed to changing boundary conditions, intended for improving current mould growth models. Future work is also suggested.
Knowledge-based system for documentation and mitigation of damages in historical structures
Cacciotti, Riccardo ; Valach, Jaroslav ; Kuneš, Petr ; Čerňanský, Martin
This paper describes motivation, functionality and structure of a knowledge-based information system for the documentation and analysis of damages in the domain of historic buildings. Based on advanced information sciences tools, like semantic technologies, this system can assist its users in finding analogous failures documented in the past, analyze the damage causes and suggest feasible restoration techniques.
Influence of geometric parameters on the stiffness of traditional dovetail timber joint
Kunecký, Jiří ; Cacciotti, Riccardo ; Kloiber, Michal
The paper presents the development of numerical modeling for a traditional dovetail timber joint. The objective is to find the influence of its geometrical properties on the mechanical stiffness of the joint as well as to assess the main problems and limitations faced during the numerical modeling of the structure. An experiment with a replicated timber joint was used to validate the model. Material properties were ascertained and contact adjustment was made. Parametric study was performed: two angles of the joint beams were varied. Suitable ranges of the angles for each type of loading were found. Main limitations and problems present in the modeling are depicted in the discussion.
MONDIS: Knowledge-Based System of Failure of Historical Constructions
Valach, Jaroslav ; Cacciotti, Riccardo ; Čerňanský, Martin ; Kuneš, Petr
The main aim of introducing and developing a knowledge-based system of failure of historical constructions called MONDIS is to overcome a lack of data on defects of monuments. MONDIS proposes a methodology capable of reproducing the logical relationship between the manifestation of damage, its diagnosis and the possible interventions. Based on novel information sciences tools, like semantic technologies, the system will be able to assist users in finding similar failures cases, in analyzing the causes of damage and also suggesting suitable restoration techniques accordingly to conservation principles of intervention.
