The notion of American patriotism as deployed in the US political arena
Mukařovský, David ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Topolovská, Tereza (referee)
This thesis aims to explore the rich meaning of patriotism in the US politics. The theoretical part focuses on the facets of patriotism specific to the USA-American exceptionalism and the Pledge of Allegiance-and on types of patriotism in general. The practical part is devoted to delineating the notions of patriotism of three prominent American politicians among whom there are significant ideological differences: President Donald Trump, late Senator John McCain, and former President Barack Obama. Their opinions on patriotism are uncovered mostly by analyzing their speeches, but in some cases also by reading their tweets, listening to interviews with them, and reading articles about them. My hypothesis was that when we compare their views of patriotism, we will find that not all three men advance a similar kind of patriotism. I believe this hypothesis to be definitively confirmed in the conclusion where the final comparison highlights many differences, including essential ones, between the patriotism of Trump and that of the other two politicians. Keywords: American patriotism, American exceptionalism, Donald Trump, John McCain, Barack Obama

Boško, Martin ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Pípalová, Renata (referee)
This Bachelor thesis deals with the literary translation of a part of a book called Stargate Atlantis: The Lost (2011) from English to Czech. It consists of three parts - the introduction, the practical part, and the theoretical part. Besides the introduction, there is a short passage in the first part that briefly synopsizes those of the Stargate series which preceded the book. This passage also familiarizes the reader with the Legacy series which was created after the end of the original series thanks to the work of some of its fans and is its unofficial continuation, mainly the Stargate Atlantis: Homecoming (2011) book, which is the immediate prequel of the book analyzed by this BA thesis. The practical part contains a mirror translation of the first three chapters created by the author of this thesis. The theoretical part of this work explores certain aspects of the translation and explains why the translation in the practical part is created the way it is. In addition to the explanation of the continuity principle regarding previous translations of the other parts of this series, which was the main motivation and a major influence on the way the translation was created, this part also lists the books of translation and linguistic theory which significantly contributed towards its scholarly...

The pivotal intention of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive and detailed comparison of the contemporary machine translation and the traditional translation performed by a person. The theoretical part contains two segments which are essential towards establishing the background for the thesis. Firstly, a brief historical context is presented to illustrate how and why the concept of machine translation came to exist. Its relevance, utilization and basic technological principles are presented within the confines of the technology currently available. Secondly, an overview of specific language elements which commonly present an obstacle for translators, be it those possessing human or artificial intelligence, is elaborated and briefly commented upon. The practical part contains a selected body of text which is then translated, firstly by using a specific software and secondly by the author of the thesis. These translations are compared with regard to their accuracy, with references made to the mechanics of machine translation and the source code employed to perform the translation itself, effectively combining linguistic point of view with the technological aspect of the algorithm applied in the translation software. The final part contains a conclusion and summary of obtained results and...
