Goldoni's Comedies of Milieu

The abstract and key words This bachelor's thesis is focused on the comedies of milieu written by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. The first chapter focuses on the artistically-historic context of his age, while the next chapter is focused on Goldoni's life, theatrical work and his reform of the theatre. After the general description of the comedy of milieu and its specific attributes, a detailed analysis of the four chosen comedies follows, with the focus on the specific characteristics of the social class and the milieu in the relation to the characters: La bottega del caffè (The Coffee Shop), Il campiello (The Little Square), La casa nova (The New House) and Le baruffe chiozzotte (Brawling in Chioggia). For each comedy there are demonstrations for a better understanding of the text. The last part of the thesis focuses on the comparison of these comedies, their visionary potential in the age of their creation and their meaning in today's world.
