Depression among aging population is a common phenomenon. This thesis studies potential socioeconomic and health-related factors as determinants of depression. We analyse a cross-sectional dataset of European residents aged 50+, provided by the SHARE project. Hypotheses regarding the factors are formulated based on existing literature. A logistic regression is applied and a number of robustness checks is carried out. A significant positive relationship is found between depression and factors associated with poor physical health and financial difficulties. The odds of depression incidence increase substantially for women both in the Czech Republic and Europe. Stratified analysis points that being employed reduces the chance of developing depression among the Europeans aged 50-64, while it increases the chance significantly for the Czechs aged 65+. 1 Deprese mezi stárnoucí populací je častým jevem. Tato práce zkoumá so- cioekonomické a zdravotní faktory jako potenciální determinanty deprese. An- alyzujeme data pro evropskou populaci ve věku 50+, poskytnutá projektem SHARE. Hypotézy ohledně jednotlivých faktorů jsou formulovány na základě existující literatury. Používáme logistickou regresi, a dále prověřujeme robust- nost na několika vzorcích. Signifikantně pozitivní vztah je nalezen zejména mezi výskytem deprese a faktory spojenými se špatným fyzickým zdravím a finančními obtížemi. V Evropě i v České republice jsou šance na výskyt deprese značně vyšší pro ženy. Analýza stratifikovaných dat poukazuje, že zaměstnání snižuje šance na rozvinutí deprese u Evropanů ve věku 50-64, zatímco tyto šance podstatně zvyšuje u Čechů ve věku 65+. 1
