Zelené řasy (Chlorophyta) jsou v polárních oblastech důležitou skupinou primárních producentů, ale dosud jim byla ve srovnání se sinicemi a rozsivkami věnována menší pozornost. Podmínky prostředí ve sladkovodních habitatech Arktidy a Antarktidy (jezera, mokřady, potoky a řeky, ledovce a sněhová pole) jsou velmi variabilní a mikroorganismy zde musí odolávat řadě extrémních podmínek. Přehled 58 rodů zelených řas z polárních oblastí ukázal převahu zástupců z tříd Chlorophyceae a Trebouxiophyceae, více rodů bylo doloženo z Arktidy. Z hlediska typu habitatu jsou rodově nejbohatší jezera a nejméně bohaté mokřady. To může být ale ovlivněno nevyrovnaným počtem prací z obou polárních oblastí a z různých habitatů. Výskyt několika druhů byl dosud doložen pouze z Antarktidy, celkově se ale rozšíření zelených řas předpokládá spíše kosmopolitní. Tradiční metodou výzkumu biodiverzity je světelná mikroskopie, která má však omezení kvůli většinou jednoduché morfologii zelených řas. Jejich určení do rodu či druhu je proto často možné až pomocí molekulárních metod. Zatímco sekvenování Sangerovou metodou je využíváno pro charakterizaci jednodruhových izolátů, metagenomová analýza umožňuje podchycení nekultivovatelných či vzácných druhů. Green algae (Chlorophyta) are an important group of primary producers in polar regions, but they received less attention in comparison with cyanobacteria and diatoms. Environmental conditions of freshwater habitats in the Arctic and Antarctica (lakes, wetlands, streams, glaciers and snow) are very variable and microoganisms have to resist multiple extreme conditions. The overview of 58 green algal genera from polar regions showed the prevalence of representatives from the Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae, more genera were documented from the Arctic. Lakes have the highest and wetlands the lowest genus richness. This fact could be affected by uneven number of studies in both polar regions and from different habitats. The occurrence of several species has been documented only in Antarctica, but overall the green algae distribution is supposed to be rather ubiquitous. The traditional method of biodiversity research is light microscopy, which has limitations due to simple morphology of green algae. Their identificatiton at genus or species level is thus often possible only using molecular methods. While sequencing by Sanger method is used for determination of monospecific isolates, metagenome analysis allows the identification of non-cultivable or rare species.
