Tématem předkládané disertační práce je recepce antiky v české literatuře a kultuře mezi léty 1880 a 1910. Práce zkoumá a analyzuje různé projevy vztahování se k antice v období, které se vyznačuje nápadným příklonem k antickým námětům, motivům a formám. První, nejrozsáhlejší část, metodologicky se inspirující demytizující perspektivou Vladimíra Macury a Jiřího Raka, se věnuje rozboru vybraných mýtů a stereotypů o antice, které se v dobovém diskurzu objevují nejčastěji: sleduje protikladný obraz starověkého Řecka a Říma a dále se zaměřuje na topos antického slunce a nebe, sochy (včetně dobových reakcí na objev polychromie antického sochařství), řecké gymnastiky s jejím využitím v tělovýchovném hnutí Sokol a nakonec na topos přirozeného antického člověka. Samostatné kapitoly jsou však v této části věnovány i významným prostředníkům recepce, tj. gymnaziálnímu školství a překladu. Druhá část se zabývá obrazem antiky v divadelních hrách Jaroslava Vrchlického, zvláště v trilogii Hippodamie, a jejich dobovou recepcí v divadelních recenzích a referátech. Ve třetí části je pak interpretována antická tematika v díle tří autorů: v básnické tvorbě Jaroslava Vrchlického, ve sbírkách Sodoma a Sexus necans Jiřího Karáska ze Lvovic a v díle Josefa Svatopluka Machara od devadesátých let do roku 1907, kdy vyšel... The theme of the dissertation is the reception of the Classical Antiquity in the Czech Literature between 1880 and 1910. The aim was to analyse the ways in which Czech culture related to the Classical Antiquity in the period of increased concern with Classical topics, motifs and forms. The first, largest part, methodologically inspired by the demythicizing perspective of Vladimír Macura and Jiří Rak, concerns with stereotypical views of the Classical Antiquity particularly prominent in the contemporary discourse: the antithetical image of noble Greece and corrupted Rome, the topos of bright Hellenic Sun and clear Sky, the ideology behind the common opinion that Ancient sculptures were all white (and the reactions to the discovery that they were, in fact, polychrome), the topos of a Greek athletic body and its employment in the policy of the Czech sports movement 'Sokol' (Falcon), and last but not least the topos of a man unspoilt by civilization and living in accordance with the Nature. Separate chapters are also devoted to two then important intermediaries of reception, grammar schools and translation.
