Na světě dochází každoročně k velkému množství úrazů páteře, při kterých je poraněna také mícha. Poškození míšní tkáně vede k řadě dysfunkcí, které výrazně snižují kvalitu života. Vývoji účinné léčebné terapie je proto věnována značná pozornost. Velkým přínosem pro studium míšního poranění je využití zvířecích modelů, které nám poskytují reálnou představu o probíhajících patofyziologických procesech, a na nichž je možné testovat nové léčebné postupy. Nejčastěji využívaným modelem je potkan, u kterého existuje řada způsobů, jak experimentální míšní lézi vytvořit. Velmi precizní je kontuzní model, při kterém je simulováno pohmoždění míchy pomocí počítačově řízeného přístroje. Pro studium patofyziologie je zase vhodný kompresní model, kde se kromě pohmoždění uplatňuje i přetrvávající komprese míchy. Transekce a hemisekce jsou určené pro výzkum regenerace axonů, jelikož pouze u nich lze s jistotou odlišit nově rostoucí vlákna od zachovaných. Méně často jsou využívány fotochemický a excitotoxický model, dále se můžeme setkat s dislokací a distrakcí obratlů, případně může být mícha poškozena teplem či naopak chladem. Každý model má své unikátní vlastnosti, které jej předurčují k využití v rozdílných oblastech výzkumu poraněné míchy, a výběr jednoho z nich by se tak měl řídit požadavky konkrétní studie. A large number of spinal injuries that cause damage to the spinal cord occur every year. Such damage to spinal cord tissue leads to a number of dysfunctions that significantly reduce quality of life and therefore the development of effective therapies remains a very important issue. The use of animal models is considered the major tool of this research field, enabling the testing of new treatments as well as observing ongoing pathophysiological processes. Rats are the most frequently used animal model due to the many possible ways of creating a spinal cord lesion on them. The contusion model uses a computer-controlled device to simulate the spinal cord contusion and therefore is highly precise. However, a compression model seems to be the most suitable model for pathophysiological studying. Besides contusion it enables persistent compression to the spinal cord. Transection and hemisection methods are intended for axonal regeneration research, as only these models can reliably distinguish new growing fibers from the preserved ones. Less often photochemical and excitotoxic models are used. Lastly, dislocation and distraction of vertebrae or damage to the spinal cord using heat or cold can be carried out.
